I'm curious to know how many of you observed Halley's comet when it was last here.

Did you see Halley's comet in 1986

They kind of forced you to in my school. There wasn't much choice.

And I wasn't a rebel back then to buck the system.

I would say I peeked. Watching comets live is extremely boring.

I would much rather look at a good set of pictures.

Yeah, I saw it, but I had to look through a telescope, and even then it didn't look like nuttin' but a big fuzzy star with no tail at all.

I don't remember either way. Given the year, I was 19, and probably high.

All I can remember is looking for the space ship my friends said I would see, the actual comet didn't really matter. Man I was so stupidly young.

Space ship?

Ahahahahahahahahahaha!

That was my experience as well.

pretty much this except i'm pretty sure i was already getting in trouble on a fairly regular basis back then. anyway, i don't remember caring a whole hell of a lot, but i do remember it being hammered into my brain. like the challenger explosion, knowledge regarding the existence of duran duran and being required to be ascared of commies it's just one of those things that got stuck in there in the 80's.

We went camping in the mountains with another family that had a really nice telescope. I remember kneeling in the snow, the landscape all silvery with the moonlight and zillions of stars, peering through the eyepiece at a small but discernible dot with a short tail. It was pretty awesome.

You saw a tail?

What continent was this on?

They told me it was a tail. It was more like a lopsided dot, or a star that someone smudged slightly on one side. But I thought it was pretty cool. I was all into astronomy then. And the pyramids.

It looked like this when I saw it. Very anticlimactic.
