Last week one of the R.N.'s I work with had asked if I could do a favor for her. Her brother who lives down the street from her had a wooden Storm Door he needed hung. He had already called around to the general contractors and the soonest they could come out and hang the door would be August. (They're busy doing panic work for people getting ready for Hurricane Season.) They also told him the cost would be roughly $500.00.

I agreed to drive over and hang the damned door, (it's not all that hard to do.) and he told her he would pay me $200.00 for the work. We agreed on this Friday.

Last night he got home to find someone had tried to break into his place. His front door is damaged. He put out calls for a contractor to come by and replace the door but once again he was told maybe in August. He called his sister who called me. Now he wants two doors hung. (He went out and bought the doors.) She offered me an extra hundred if I could get out there tomorrow. She also stated her brother was willing to pay extra.

What the hell I didn't have anything planned for tomorrow so I told her to hang onto her money. I would do this as a favor for her. As for the extra her brother promised, I could care less.

Now I know you're asking why I would do this. Well there are a couple of reasons. One she is a friend. Two, I truly have nothing else to do tomorrow, and three, she has informed me her brother has a garage full of power tools he has no use for and she's been talking with him about those tools.

Hey the $200.00 could come in handy. I have my eye on a new necklace for my wife and this would allow me to get it for her on our anniversary.

As for the tools? I never turn down free power tools. (Now if I could find me a good drawknife that would be nice too.)

Yes they can be. Unfortunately no one makes them now. (Hell most people don't even know what they are.)

My father has several of them and has promised that if he doesn't find one for me in a yard sale up north then he'll give me one of his.

Hey I'm doing better than most. I have several Planes including an old style wooden Block Plane.

Let me think on that. I have seen some quality handtools in a catalog including drawn knives, carving chisels, squares and special saws. Just have to remember the seller.

They are out of stock but Garrett Wade was the company I was thinking about.

Draw Knife Link

No drooling on the keyboard when looking at this catalog. ;)

Well I went over at Noon with a car load of tools. It was hot, it was muggy, but I started in on the job.

I removed the old door, framing and all and replaced it with the new one. (Had to do a bit of cutting but nothing crazy.) It took me all of half an hour.

Then my friend came up with the idea of using her brothers old Storm Door to replace another neighbors damaged door. No sweat, I got that done within another half hour.

Well another of her neighbors, just about old enough to have changed Jesu's Diapers saw ths and pointed out that a contractor had dropped off a brand new storm door for her place but then pulled out without putting it in place.

*sigh* How could I say no? This one took a bit of work but what the hell. Call it community service. So in two and a half hours I put in three doors.

My friends brother gave me a check for $200.00.

The little old lady wanted to give me $50.00 for the work I had done for her, which I refused.

Well the three of them put their heads together and talked for a while. Then the brother started digging in his garage.

I walked away from the job with $200.00 in my wallet and a Brand New Makita Cordless Set. (Sabre Saw, Drill, Three Lithium Batteries and all sorts of attachments.) I don't think these things have ever been used.

That was, I think a good days work.

 The horror! I HATE installing doors. There's always something that goes wrong. Hubby and I will never install another interior door on a Ball Home for less than $125.00 per door. He hung 3 exterior doors on another home by himself. He had to completely rebuild one casing. And then the foundation of the house sank. The doors had to be releveled.

LOLOL Doors are a bit of a pain on occasion, but the true pains are windows. I almost refuse to do them. (I refuse to do them for other than family.)

Reglazing on the other hand, well that depends on the window.

Electrical and Masonry, I leave that for the pro's, unless of course it is for me or Family.
