I'm back... with a warning.

After many many hours of battling my puter and taking up a lot of other litizens time with advice which I tried I'm back. My machine is now running sweetly and will probably last long enough for me to save up enough shekels to be able to afford a new one.

Many people offered me advice on how to fix this electronic paper weight and I'd like to thank them here. In particular Draco, Weird Harold, and a new guy or girl called unskilled1.

I found the reason my machine went kaflooey. I was hacked for the second time in the last few months. How do I know this? Three of my stories were altered and comments were added. I'm not saying that someone from Lit did this but very few people know how much writing means to me and Lit is the only place I discuss this side of me.

I now have a bullet proof firewall.

At the risk of throwing a wet monkey into your wrench works, there is no such thing as a bullet proof firewall. They are a necessary barrier, but the only true safety is to disconnect altogether which is obviously not the most interactive way to use the damn computers... so do keep your wits about you (or, as they used to say, "Hey! Let's be careful out there.")

Don't take it too hard, kiwi, I'm a professional computer cynic in my other life. Protection is a balance between ease of use and genuine security... maintaining interesting things on computers makes you an interesting target, but EVERY computer on the net is a potential target because of its potential use to do things with it regardless of what data is stored there.

I'm moving out of here soon. I just need to get the finances sorted and find a one bedroom flat... not an easy job up here. I had an offer to live with a lady but after seeing the way she treats her own kids I can't. I wouldn't be able to take Jamie into that sort of atmosphere even if it is only for every second weekend. So now all I need is a second job and the winning Lotto ticket.

You don't know what you are missing brother. Can you do me a favour? Put together a price for me for a machine with a minimum of 1.2 Ghz motherboard, 256 meg of RAM, DVD-Rom drive and the usual bells and whistles? That will give me a target to shoot for. It will take a while to get it together but I have to do it.
