I have authored a number of stories, and I'd like to add two illustrations to my latest. But if I put it in the Illustrated category, how will my readers be notified that I have published a new story? May I put an illustrated story with my other stories?

I'm not entirely sure I understand your question. The people who follow you will see that you pusblish a story in the "All Activity"-Tab of their Control Panel, regardless of the category you publish the story in.

If you put an illustration in a story, you have no choice what category it goes to. It goes to the Illustrated category. If you edit old stories to include illustrations, they will be reposted to the Illustrated category too.

The illustrated stories category is a story category. Followers will be alerted the same as if you'd posted a story to Erotic Couplings, Romance, or any other category. The lag time between submission and posting for illustrated stories is significantly longer than for regular submissions, so be prepared for that.
