Illustrated Story Backlash?

I recently wrote my first story where I included an illustration. I had been intrigued by an AV Cloudy used and wrote a story that viewing it had triggered. She graciously consented to let me use the photo in the story, and I thought the reader would benefit from seeing it. The photo was sexy, but not nude or lewd.

The story has received 26,000 views (in three days), more than 10,000 more than my second most viewed story has received in seven months. It has received four nice public comments, and a couple positive feedbacks.

And the scoring is the only one I have below 4 ! It currently rests at 3.93 with 30 votes.

Maybe the story sucks - and I can deal with that. But I'm wondering if I'm not suffering a Illustrated Category backlash. Do readers of stories in that category expect explicit images to go with the story?

Have others experienced this phenomena?

What really blew me away Rhino, was the number of views. Over 8000+ a day!

Not stories, but I had a similar experience in the poetry section this year.

My illustrated poem "I tremble..." had a very good rating at the end of the first month, so much so that it was picked in May for the monthly nominations. But, being the first of the illustrated Poetry list, it received a lot of views during the year (it's currently the 14th most read poem), and a lot of votes. Its rating has never stopped falling, after that first month.

I'd imagine that readers expect naughty pictures to go with the naughty words. If they don't get them, then I would think they'd treat it like a non-erotic turning up in the Incest category.

JMHO, but I think that on site for dirty stories, the readers are going to expect the pictures to be dirty too.

Lot of people probably just wanted to see the pictures with no intent to acutally read the story. I'll admit that I've done this for a variety of reasons- to see what kind of illustrations people use, to see if there is a photo of the author (sometimes there is), possilby even a little restless boredom, or idle curiosity.

Personally, I loved the story....the picture was old news to me. ;)

Thank you, Ted.

Thanks C. But it sounds like our audience wants you to take the t-shirt off. :)

Seriously, I'm content with the PC's, and don't care about the voting (not that much anyway), but was amazed at the views, and the apparent punishment for not including explicit images.

They just lack imagination, that's all. ;)

Obviously the readers don't realize you aren't allowed to use explicit or nude pictures. At least that's the rule according to the FAQ.

So...doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?
I mean, people can write disgusting, violent stories and post those, but no pictures of someone naked? That seems a little silly.

Apparently you can have topless photography and simulated sex.

See the #2 Illustrated story on the top list :

I guess this is what people expect in Illustrated.

So be it. I still like my story.

I do wish Illustrated was a secondary classification. That you would first put it into a primarcy classification (Romane, First time etc.), and then list it as Illustrated.

A lot of the voting problem comes from the fact that ANY story can be an illustrated story. If I write a BDSM story and post it to BDSM stories, then readers pretty much know what to expect. However, if I post it to illustrated, then a number of people who don't like BDSM stories will give it low votes. Others will want more art, but want it all for free. Well, I want a million dollars too . . .but...

Illustrated covers such a broad area, not everyone is going to connect with the story. All the other writers/artist who post there suffer the same fate. It's not too bad though.

Personally, I don't like the idea of photos being posted there at all. How much effort does it take to take a snapshot of someone? And then there are less scrupulous people who steal other people's pictures. I'm not naming any names, but some of those pictures look like they came out of a movie.

And then I'm stuck with pencil and paper trying to make something original.

I have a story on Lit. that was originally supposed to have an illustration in it and it somehow got fumbled as was posted to a different category, though a related category nonetheless. I'm certain that the story would have gotten better reviews than it did simply because the illustration tied together a chunk of the storyline.

The thing is that when you post a picture of any kind in your story, if you believe that people are expecting a certain type of picture and you don't give that to them, then you need to give them something that is so substantial it will still hold their interest, at least, and possibly impress them just the same.

It would be great to have something in the boards where artists could get in on the action of producing pieces and/or critiquing pieces that will go into storylines. From a thread I saw someone else start I get the feeling that is something that would not currently fly well anywhere in Literotica.

In a perfect world, I could draw like Rhino to illustrate my stories.

Or, better yet, have a bevy of beautiful women eager to pose nude for my camera to illustrate my stories.

yes. Would be groovish if the illustrated stories could be cross referenced to their catagories as well as having sub catagories listed within the Illustrated catagory.

A pile of extra work for Manu...AND does not seem to be a high priority at this time.

I DID request a separate Forum for illustration...no response. No big demand.

I have had a thread(s) dedicated to erotic illustration...and even promoted it over in the GB...as well as the AH. Still relatively minor viewership and response.

well afterall it is LITerotica.

Literature and art are hand in hand as parts of all cultures. perhaps its not that the demand is low, but rather that the voices that speak up for that seemingly natural progression are too sparse and lack any real unity?
