As you probably know, London is experiencing a violent crime wave. One trial lawyer there says "London is more dangerous these days than New York." Last summer, the government's own statistics showed a 19 percent nationwide increase in violent crime. In London, robberies jumped 38 percent.

What's the solution? British legislators are working to abolish citizens' right to trial by jury--a legal right that was guaranteed when King John signed the Magna Carta nearly 800 years ago! There's also a proposal to abolish the double jeopardy rule, which prohibits the government from trying a person twice for the same crime. Remember, it's the British system of laws provided the basis for America's legal traditions.

All of this legal nonsense is attacking the symptoms, not the cause of the problem.

No one wants to talk about Britain's ban on privately-owned handguns. In fact, the CBS News article cited below doesn't even mention the words "gun" or "firearm." No one wants to consider that the British government caused the current crime wave by taking away Britons' right to own handguns for self-defense. It's the awful truth--and the statist politicians and the media just can't face it.

Now the government is working to cover up its mistakes and take away more of the people's rights. After all, the populace is unarmed. They'll have to go along with it, because now only the government has the guns. It's a big-government socialist's wet dream: a citizenry that's powerless to respond to infringements upon their rights.

This is what will happen in America if the anti-gun zealots have their way, my friends. Have you ever heard the saying that the Second Amendment protects all the others? It's true.

Government fears armed subjects. That's why the government wants your guns.

I just throuw them out there, you can do what ever you like with them that you want., this is one of those , so-so topics that I only semi agress/disagree on. but noone would want to hear my ideas on the reality and stupidity of gun control/uncontrol.

guns scare the hell out of me...

don't own one... don't want to...

but i'll defend a gun owners right to own one any way i can... even with rocks and sticks if i have to...

Todd, you don't know what you're talking about here. Even before they banned handguns - after a middle-aged man (David Hamilton) gunned down school kids and teachers at a Scottish primary school - the general public weren't armed. Hand guns were available to a few people through gun clubs (which was how he got them) but you weren't actually allowed to shoot anyone with them.

You've never been allowed to own a gun to protect yourself or your property here - which is why gun related deaths in Britain are extremely rare. If somebody wandered into your back garden and you blew their brains out you'd be done for murder.

If home owners had guns then a lot more criminals would have them too and crime in London would be even more fucked up.

You can't compare the situation in the US (and, I guess, Canada) with the UK because America has always had a gun culture - the right to bare arms is even in the constitution - which would make it very hard to have guns completely banned. Britain has never had a gun culture. The majority of police here don't have guns and the majority of people who commit violent crimes don't either. That's a good thing.

You'll find a higher percentage of group violence at UK Soccer matches than you do in North American sports, and there are probably more drink related altercations but elsewhere the percentage of violent crimes and murder rates is much lower here than in the US.

Lavender

Not doing a very good job of avoiding this thread, are you?

LOL Then give them hell. Just try to play nice with the others.

Statistics.......

Can be used to prove any point you like.
I believe the goalposts for compiling this crime list have been moved in the last year. Ticks are now put in one column, that were previously put in another. It all depends what the person who is paying for the statistics want to prove.
Also society evolves, the definition of what constitutes a violent crime changes from year to year.

OH JOY....Lets call Charleton Heston and tell him we have an enthusiastic new member for the NRA.....
