If you woke up this morning, looked in the mirror, and discovered you were black.

This is a question intended for "white" folks that appeared in a now defunct forum years ago. Let's see how the lit crowd runs with it.

"If you woke up one morning this week and discovered that overnight you had become black (or, shall we say for those who do not understand, a "nigger"), how would your life change?"

[suggestion: when I first participated in the original thread back in 1997, I went and posed this question to a black co-worker who really gave me some things to think about. You might try it too]

All the dark-skinned people are invited to participate.

Well the first thing I'd do is cancel my solarium session......
If I was a male the first thing I'd do is cross my fingers and 'look down'.....

i'd drive to the other side of town and slap the crap out of my mother...

I'd go to Walmart and buy every Rap CD in sight to learn why "rap music" isn't an oxymoron.

I would have absolutely no idea what to do with my hair. Since I am one of the extraordinarily few females who loves her hair just the way it is, I'd go into mourning if it didn't come with me. Then I'd get a hold of N'Bushe Wright and see how to get her do.

The rest of it? Well, I'm minority already, no big change from the perceptions of others. I'd still be me, just a different color. Would my facial and body features change to properly reflect the black American heritage or would I just be C. Thomas Howell?

i have no idea how i would change... hopefully i wouldnt. to me people are people, not skin color.

I think this has happened to me once or twice. Very Kafkaesque kinda moment. I just went back to bed and life was cool again.

Would I be hung, could I jump again, could I finally dance, would I go to the project, No......I would only have darker pigment. Bummer......

After the initial freak out...

I would go on with my day as usual.

Apart from the initial surprise I'd be very interested to discover in what ways I was treated differently in society.

Oh and I would check to see if I was hung like a rogue donkey:D

LMAO

I would revisit some of my exes and ass fuck them - hard - with my new double whopper - LOL

I'd probably be happy, because then my big ass would be more appreciated...

I personally find women of color gorgeous. I'd be honored to join their ranks.

Black, darkies..........

I damn sure wouldn't go to Alabama.

Many years ago I read a book titled "Black Like Me". The true story of a white man who took injections to darken his skin color to pass for black. If this thread interests you it would be interesting reading.

Shazzammm, Andy!

I'd haul down my skivvies and see if I got the whole package or not!........quickly!!

dickE

Black guy here......

Good thread. LOL

WriterDom I'd go to Walmart and buy every Rap CD in sight to learn why "rap music" isn't an oxymoron.

rap music isnt an oxymoron. Rap "singer" is. Rappers dont sing their music, they rap them.

I would like to wake up Jewish. Just for like a month or so. I used to work in a jewish community center and they have a tight community. I would like to get inside it and see whats it like.

I also would want to wake up a women. So i could experience multiple orgasism and be a slut for like a week. I'd fuck every thing moving. I also want to see whats it like to retain water.

As a Black Alabaman this is just wrong and stupid to say...."Black Like Me" is only like 40 years old.

Well, lookee here. A black Alabaman from Georgia.

Yes, Black like me is like 40 yrs old but that doesn't change one darn thing except the degree of ignorance.

I am just a good old white boy from yankee land but what is really really stupid is to pretend all is well for blacks in Alabama.

I have been in Alabama several times in the last three years and I have seen enough to make me sick. Recruitment posters for the kkk (I refuse to capitalize that) posted in public places. Signs on laundromats saying white only in letters larger than those saying laundromat. Watching black men step off the sidewalk to avoid a white coming the other way. A personal friend of mine is an FBI agent who refused a promotion because it ment an assignment in Alabama for two years. He is black and has a white wife. He said he would rather protect his family from the bigots than get the promotion and the resulting pay increase.

So if things are good where you are stay there, but in my book Uncle Tom is the only black in Alabama who seems to have it that good.

** getting off my soap box **

I don't even like Alabama as a white man.

Okay, Synnerman, I have to say something here...

I understand what you are saying, however, you don't live in Alabama and you probably haven't spent much time there either. It just so happens that I have alot of family from Alabama. I will admit that alot of them are what I would characterize as "Good Ol' Boys", there is not ONE racist in the bunch!!! I get really annoyed when people make generalizations about the South and southerners.
Synnerman, you know me. I am worldly and have been around the block more than once. I can honestly say there is no where in the world that I would rather live than in the south. I honestly don't think racial tentions in the south are any higher than any where else. I think racial tentions are probably much higher in other areas of the country, like California. I choose my friends based on their coolness level, not their skin colour.
Basically, I am saying, walk a mile in my shoes before you before you make any statements.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Until now, I have never given this much thought. But it's worth thinking about.

Since I am black, I'm going to reverse the thread. If I woke up white one day, my life would change, but not too dramatically. I would be the same person, but society's outlook, I feel would be a little different.

Where I am now, there aren't many black people so they stick together alot (or do they stand out more?). Whereas, white people pretty much assimilate into where ever they are at that moment (or is it that there are more of them, so it just seems that way?). I wouldn't mind straighter hair though, cause combing this can be a hassle at best. (And maybe, I'll have a better time getting a student loan from the bank!). But sometimes, I can't help thinking, would I get more dates? On further review, I wouldn't want to date someone who sees me as a trophy anyway!

Pipercatt, you're so sweet. Thanks for the kudos!
Synnerman, looking for "Black like me", sounds like a very interesting read. I'm not from here, but even I can't imagine things in Alabama being that bad. If so, I hope I never have to go there.
