I just watched...for the umpteenth time...Jodie Foster and Matthew McConnahey(sp) in the movie 'Contact' based on the book by the late Astronomer, Carl Sagan.

If you were to write a sequel to that book...where would you start and what would you include?

(yeah, I'll steal it if it's good enough)

I'd probably start with Foster somehow learning about the length of the video footage from her trip ... twist in the rich benefactor ... and find her a female love interest/co-star.

The book or the movie? They end differently.

Damn good both, though.

I'd start out with billions and billions of stars

Yes....'billions and billions' has rather become a 'Saganism'. And in the film, "...seems like an awful waste of space..." also...

I'd start it with James Woods getting his ass kicked by someone. He's a prick.

The machine is still standing and operable. That's something that wasn't addressed at the end of the movie (I've never read the book). Send someone else into the machine. Someone who knows what to expect, and is completely calm, cool and collected.

That person comes back with the same story that Ellie told. At this point, the government realizes that it's true. From there you could go a million different directions. The realization by the government and how they would handle it with the public would be the driving feature of the story. Governments being what they are, they would try to cover it up. Yet, there will always be the people in the government that go to the press anonymously.

IMO, that conflict would be the meat of a sequel.

I wouldn't.

Seriously, the book is complete as it is. The movie had some flaws. Most of the worst movies in history were pointless sequels (although pointless prequels are rapidly gaining ground)
