I'm reposting this thread, to reach more people.
I've already seen that rida's ok.
Here's how you can help.
To the best of my knowledge, there are not a lot of Japanese on this site (although, what do I know?)
Japan was hit by a 8.9 earthquake at 2:46 pm Friday local time (GMT +9). That and the concurrent tsunami have killed hundreds of people, and did massive infrastructure damage.

This is what you can do to help (from a newspaper article, found here.
In the meantime, here are several ways you can help:
- Convoy of Hope's Disaster Response team established connection with in-country partners who have been impacted by the damage and are identifying the needs and areas where Convoy of Hope may be of the greatest assistance. The best way to help is to donate online at convoyofhope.org or text TSUNAMI to 50555 to donate $10 to Convoy of Hope's Disaster Response efforts.
- GlobalGiving.org has already launched the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, raising funds which they plan to distribute to various efforts in the region.
- International Medical Corps is responding to the health needs of the disaster's victims.
- The Red Cross is asking for $10 donations to their relief efforts in Japan online or by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to donate from your phone.
You can donate online here.
- Save the Children is moving quickly to address the situation there. Donations to their Children's Emergency Fund will support this effort.
- World Vision has also announced global mobilization in response to tsunami warnings. To help, consider making a donation to their World Vision's Disaster Response Fund.

I've posted this very same thing in the PG.

The death toll in Japan is expected to top 10,000.

People in Sendai, one of the hardest hit cities, are queuing up for food and fuel.

The BBC mentions that:
British nationals and friends and relatives of those in Japan should contact the Foreign Office in the UK on +44(0) 20 7008 0000.

A new tsunami is approaching the Japanese coast.
Here's the latest news. (the news is about 20 minutes old at the time of this post.)

This mashable page shows how you can help.
1. If you would like to donate to the American Red Cross for Japan Earthquake Relief, just text REDCROSS to 90999. Each text will provide $10 towards the Red Cross’s humanitarian efforts.
2. Alright, donate to the Red Cross here.
3. Zynga, known for its effective social good campaigns, has partnered with Save the Children’s Japan Earthquake Tsunami Emergency Fund to get its users to donate money through the purchase of virtual goods in CityVille, FrontierVille, FarmVille and its other games.

100% of the proceeds from the purchase of sweet potatoes in CityVille, radishes in FarmVille or kobe cows in FrontierVille will go towards Save the Children’s efforts to provide relief in the Pacific. The world’s largest social gaming company is shooting to raise $2 million for relief efforts.
4. If you run a website, you can add a snippet of code to help.
5. Explore.org will donate $1 to send search and rescue dogs to Japan if you click the like button here.
6. Use the following hashtags on Twitter:
#Jishin: focuses around general earthquake information
#Anpi: a hashtag for the confirmation of the safety of individuals or places
#Hinan: Evacuation information

If you want to help all the pets affected by the earthquake, this blogpost offers you options.

I have no idea how my friend is managing to keep his nerves in check. With aftershocks coming minutes apart today, he is doing a wonderful job of keeping relatively calm. He says it is an up and down thing to keep from letting it all unhinge the nerves.

For those in Canada, you can't donate through text that way, but if you text REDCROSS to 30333 you can donate $5 to the Canadian one. You have to confirm with a YES text though. Apparently you can do that up to 6x a month.
