If you no longer had to work, what would you do?

If you came into an astronomical amount of money and could retire, what would you do?

I would buy a hidden and heavily fortified redoubt somewhere up in the mountains in a different part of the country, probably Alaska.

I could stock up on food, water, weapons and ammunition, and just wait...

For what?
When Yellowstone finally blows, you're gonna starve to death just like the rest of us.

i consider myself retired. i do have a "job" , if that's what you want to call this. after doing this for over 2 years, i asked myself , when this is over do i really want to go back to punching a clock, kissing someones ass for a check, worrying about where my next meal is coming from? NO.
there are ways around it all. do not worry about keepng up with the jones' , don't worry about having a house or vehicle that everyone else has, or the latest gadget all because "advertisement has us chasing cars and clothes, so we work jobs we hate, so we buy shit we do not need."
simplify your life. live within your means and figure out a way to do it without kissing someones ass. and it doesn't mean getting rich or going to college, etc..
i already do whatever the hell i please. and i intend on keeping it that way.
i garden, hang out in nature, hunt and fish, read, watch movies, do a few hobbies i enjoy, etc.. what ever i fucking please.

I don't have an ASTRONOMICAL amount of money... not like Mitt Romney or anything, but I'm retired from working for The Man and my wife and I are about to sell our business to our employees. Four kids demand way too much time and we don't plan on buying a Lear Jet or a yacht or a house with a car elevator, so what's the point?

And really, we're actually DOING what you want to do - but instead of a fortified base in Alaska we've got good neighbors. (Now that the idiot with the unleashed and now deceased dog has long ago fled the area.)

I would leave China and move to Europe.

The most important is that I would find a young pretty girl...

My job is fun, and where I meet and hang out with many of my best friends. So I'd keep working, but take vacations whenever the hell I pleased.

I could do that now, I suppose. For maybe a year or three until I ran out of savings.

I am retired but not with an astronomical amount of money.

I'll continue to do what I do now - annoy City Hall, run and participate in numerous organisations, look after grandchildren...

...and write sometimes.

i'd have fucked up dogs that nobody else would ever want and i'd turn them into dogs that somebody would love. i'd learn how to sculpt with wood. i'd walk. i'd explore. i'd learn to ride. i'd spend a small fortune on visiting zoos and castles.

I would buy a cabin cruiser and cruise the 7 seas only pulling into port to refuel and stock up on supplies.

That is even more work.

the great thing about it is, you can pick and choose which to apply for. as with any job. you can go for the ones that require you to bust your ass 30-40 hours a week, or the ones where you are basicly paid to live somewhere to make sure no one breaks in, steals anything, or burns the place down. those are usually in remote places.
i do advise having some working knowledge of how to use a lawnmower, weedeater, light electrical and plumbing work (easily done if you can read and get books on the matter), have patience for animals, basic knowledge on how to use a tape measure and a hammer. not difficult at all, and gives you plenty of free time to do whatever the hell you want.

Simplify

I agree with ivantheterrible. I 'retired' at 58. We live on my military retirement. Simplify your live. You truly do not need as much as the 'experts' tell you, unless you want to live a high end life style.

Everything we own, we own. Its paid for, boat, car, tractor, house, land etc. This was done on an enlisted man's salary. We used the K.I.S.S. principal. Thanks, MKvDeepSea.

I do all that already for a living. But not privately. I bust my tail sometimes. One week may be 40 hrs, the next may be 70 or so.

Nice link though. It appears to be reputable. I may check it out.

I would pay off my freaking student loans, then pay off as much as I could for my family....buy their houses, cars, whatever. Then I would set up college funds for my neices & nephews, so they wouldn't have the millstone of student loans. If they didn't want to go to college, then they can use it for whatever they wanted. Then I would just go wherever my husband & I wanted to go & do. Oh & I would give a bunch of money to my dad's best friend. He has a local charity thay builds wells & schools in Kenya. They're always struggling to raise money, which is sad, because he went from being a millionaire to basically broke, helping these communities. They've saved a lot of towns though, which he says is worth every penny he spent.

I would drive across the country at the speed limit in the passing lane, with my turn signal on the whole way.

I am lucky. I retired ten years ago with enough money to live just fine. I live in another country where the cost of living is less than the U.S., and love it. I have time to relax, when I am not busy doing what I have always wanted. I bought my own ambulance to help the local hospital when the only one here is busy or out of service. I am training the local police and teachers first aid so we don't lose so many neighbors and loved ones. I did work all my life with the dream to have time to work with others. Now I am living that dream. I love it. I also have time to get on here and read all my favorite stories. Life is good. No, yachts, planes, limos, or luxuries, but all I need.

I could just hang out with special needs kids all day, which is what I do anyway.

I don't work because I don't have a college degree, and my job/career prospects without one aren't worth going out and finding one.

I am not intelligent enough to ever attend college, I live with family.
