....interested in music very much.

It could be finacial, or maybe you have a hearing problem.....

But if you claim to really like or love popular, culturally dynamic music as I do and are in your late 20's or over......

You should know who every one/or most of these muscians are.

"Love popular, culturally dynamic music?" That must be it. I don't have a clue who most of those people are.

Of course, it could also be that I don't watch any music videos so I have no idea what most of the people I listen to look like.

The GAP folks obviously had a couple of things in mind when they picked the artists..

For those ads.

Budget of course was the primary drive. Availability was the next consideration. Diversity was next.

Too big, too current, working all the time stars - are out right away. Britney ain't doin' nothin' except for big bucks. Neither is Shawn or Snoop.

So they had to find - low number, past cool, but still cool - musicians, that would wan't the exposure, except the relatively low pay and of course be available for the shoot.

By the way - you notice that they all are shot rather simply on white photo paper background with simple lighting and simple props. That's so the crew could travel to the musicians if need be but they probably only did LA and NYC. Travel budgest for a full crew gets a bit too much.

So these folks are still considered cool but they just aren't happening right now. Dewight has a relatively new album out but he's gotten more absorbed with acting and directing lately - besides he's a babe magnet and makes no bones about it. Robbie Robertson? Don't know what he's been up to - hope he's recording a new solo album - he sells low but he's great. He also acts occasionally. Sheryl Crow too - hopes she's cutting an album. Isn't one of them Richie Sambora? He's been busy with concerts for NYC of late.

Anyway - that's my take.

Sorry Sparky, you are dead wrong. If you think knowing those musicians defines good taste in music then you need a lobotomy or more than likely have already had one.

I sure as hell don't know who they are. A few I do. That guy with the long scarf annoys me. I hate anyone who takes someone else's music and changes the way it is supposed to be played or sung.

Like the Star Spangled Banner. Don't fuck with the song just to show everyone how talented you are. Sing it the right way and lets get the race started.

If you guy's ever see me walking around wearing something with a GAP logo on it will you please just shoot me.....it means I've obviously lost the plot and need putting out of my misery.

Did you not get the memo? That's what The Gap is all about. Very little of their clothing has a logo. They were the first to have high quality polos without imitating some sort of stupid pony or crest.

I wouldn't know... we don't have the GAP here, and from what I've heard that's not too much of a loss.

How about posting a list of the alleged culturally dynamic musos so us poor folk who don't get the ads can join in the debate.

well.. I don't know who chose

the musicians we've seen so far, but they aren't all oldtimers, sparks.

Macie Gray is in one of them and she's a relatively new artist. (she may be a long time heroin addict, but new grammy winner)

Isn't the reggae singer Shaggy? He's new too - well compared to Carol King he is.

They should have Carly Simon or Debbie Harry on - Joe Cocker or Bob Seager.

i hate gap ad's ... they are pompus ... but i do know all the musicians so far that i've seen ... does that make me some cool music guru ? ... i dont think so :)

Pomposity

I have to agree. I have to admit being annoyed with the ads (and I'm a fan of most of the artists participating). Ads and comments such as the one that started this thread smack a little too much of elitism - 'you have to recognize these people, where these clothes, like this music etc. to be cool'.

As an advertising strategy, it's fairly powerful but that doesn;t mean we have to buy in to it. We're people, not lemmings.

Not a flame, just an opinion, and opinons are like armpits, we all have them amd they all stink from time to time.

There isn't a GAP near me and I tend not to go in them even when I see one, but if you say they don't do the logo thing then I might have to change my policy !!

Last night. . .

I watched "Just shoot me" on t.v. (no comments). There was a joke, the punch line of which was "kiss his ass like it was Ava Gardener." Cut to Gap commercial.
Now, I thought the joke was funny, but didn't recognise any of the people in the commercial. I wondered if anyone who does recognise the commercial musicians would know who Ava Gardener was.

(Oh, another New Jersey connection--she was married to Frank Sinatra).

Sorry Kranky Sparkwrite

I hit the Clicker when 'commercials' come on

But I'll bet those musicians aren't the ones making the big bucks for those songs that they wrote and lived

Should I tell everyone that I don't have a TV and that the pretty pictures simply flicker in my head? No.... What's that smell? Anyone seen my mom?

You fools.

Did I ever mention the words cool or hip or good taste, whatever?

Did I ever say I was a fan of the GAP or commercials at all?

And as for performers reworking material originated by others???? And the mention of the Star Bangled Banner?

I mean - what the fuck kind of dumb ass shit is that?

I suppose everyone knows exactly how the Star Bangled Banner is to be performed by anyone who performs it. Everyone knows exactly what the writers intentions were as to it's performance.
I'm certain he would be insulted by Jimi Hendrix's rendition of it. Blasphemy!

Stupid fuck - whoever mentioned that dumb thought.

I simple said - If you don't know any of those GAP people - you probably aren't into music very much. You see - people who are into music, really into music know tons of stuff about it. And if you question the identity of those people - you must not be "up on popular music." There is little doubt.

So what. So you don't know. Big deal. I didn't say you weren't cool or unsophisticated. I simply am pointing out a fact.

If you don't know any of those GAP people you know little about popular music. And if you that may be the case as to you - you could never convince me otherwise. It's like claiming to be a gourmet and not knowing what a truffle was. It simply is unconvincing.

I know who they are........

:p

Too bad you can't reach into a monitor and slap the shit outta people. Or at least knock some brain cells loose.

If my personal opinon offends you, tough fucking shit. Put me on your ignore list and carry on.

Be careful who you call a stupid fuck. Some people can take offense at being called certain things. Some people don't care. If you don't know the person well enough to be sure, don't do it.

I take offense. Drag my ass outta this wheel chair, get my cane, and beat the piss outta you.

Is this a multiple question.. Because if so where is my other option

I have to listen to Ns and xander ....does that count..

And then I'm such a mean mother I subject my unborn child to different types of music.... ;)
