I will be in the Canadian Arctic the last part of August and expect to return around aug 28 or 29. That's awfully close to Labor Day. Of course, if we do LitWest at John Wayne, it's less than an hour's drive away. Feasible, but pushing things. What is the general feeling about Labor Day as a good time, those of you who might attend? Stella & Co? Nero/Wenchie/Sweetwitch? Sweetness? Will you be there Slyc, Mansome, TE99, DP?

Just my two-cents worth, but usually holiday's aren't good times for scheduling events like this. People have family commitments and they don't want to have to explain a Lit-together in saying they're going to miss that event. Labor Day is also close to the beginning of school (actually, kids here will have been in school for a week or two) and parents are having to deal with the rush of getting supplies and getting them ready to go back to school -- making it difficult for them to get away.

Just saying, but you might find things go better if you schedule just a week or two before or after the actual holiday weekend -- as you eliminate several potential conflicts.

Labor Day is tough -- 'cause the kids are just getting started to school. Plus, if I could get away over that weekend, I'd probably be attending DragonCon in Atlanta instead.

*sigh* The biz is gettin' in the way of my pleasure. When did that happen?

That settles it. No Imp, no Labor Day! Wah-hey!

How is everyone for 15-17 August? Nero, are the kids still out, back there?

That's sweet, VM ... but don't abandon that weekend if it works for everyone else!

I agree with Imp ... you have to pick the weekend that works best for you (as the organizer) where you can get a solid turnout. You'll never find a weekend where everyone can come, so you pick what works for you and go from there.

I knew it! You just don't want me there. *pout*

:p

Obviously I need Sarah's internet connect to come back up for her institutional knowledge. I know that Desert Pirate likes Labor Day and that is the last fling before school, here. I'm just worried about turnout. I've tried to throw a party before when people said that they'd come and no one showed up. It's demoralizing so I've got to have Sarah's help in making sure I put it together in an attractive manner. Of course, who wouldn't want to party in depraved California? ;)

VM ... I can attest that what she's going to tell you is jump in and do it. Pick a weekend where you can find a decent hotel that will give you a good group rate and go from there.

Just remember, it isn't going to start out huge, but if you do it right it will grow into something. But a Lit-together isn't about the size of the group, it's about the friendships formed -- and those can come from a group of 25-30 plus or a group of 8-10 people (and I've been to Lit-togethers of both sizes and have great memories of all of them).

Don't feel like you have to do a west coast version of Chicago, because trying to copy won't work. Each gathering (even the two versions in Chicago) is different from any other. As the organizer, all you can do is provide the framework by setting a date and finding a hotel deal.

And look at ease of getting there for everyone. Orange County airport area works well for you, but for a lot of people who might consider flying out they'll end up commuting out from LAX because that's where the flights will go. I can't speak for Sarah, but I'm sure that's a big reason the gathering is near O'Hare in Chicago and not near Midway -- accessibility be it people flying in from the midwest, the east, Europe, Austrailia or wherever.

But if you want to do this, it's your show. Do it the way you want to do it and learn from the experience. Then you can make the West Coast 2 even better.
