Posted a new story yesterday and you can tell when the 1 bombers come to visit and knock it out of 4.7+ to 4.6+.

I understand criticism and welcome it. But drive by shootings?

I know that is just the way it is, but having a moan. :)

Try posting a non BTB story to Loving Wives.

My “Plum Blossoms” had been floating right at the magical 4.5 mark, but it is in Exhibitionist & Voyeur. When I posted the follow 8-part story in LW, I got half a dozen 1 votes in the first 10 minutes, and a lot of hate.

After several weeks, the overall story finally topped 2. Thanks to falling off the New Stories lists and some sweeps, the chapters are floating in the low to mid 3 range. But, trying to be objective, I believe they’re still suffering close to a full star penalty for the storyline and category. And I suspect that a 90% identical story in full BTB mode with horrible consequences would have scored much better.

Then there are the “tactical” voters - I saw a comment on Oggbashan’s latest that boiled down to “it deserves a 5, but I don’t think it’s as good as your best stories so I’m giving it a 4 to reflect that.” Reminds me of a Chemistry professor I had who prided himself on never giving an A grade - he tried to get me to change my major to Chemistry, but still gave me a B+ grade.

You're very generous, assuming the one-bombers can string a coherent sentence together. But do you really want to know what they think? You'd only have to delete the comment as mindless junk.

For some reason - I have no idea whose toes I stepped on - I'm currently getting bombed on my back catalog. Jeez! Why go to all the effort?

You crossed their path? Happened to me with my last story - all my earlier stories showed a noticeable drop, though the sweeps seem to have mostly compensated.

Though I can’t see what in your recent stories could have set them off.

My favourites are the commenters who say, "This sucks - no stars!" Apparently it doesn't occur to them that not voting at all is quite a bit better for the score than one-bombing.

Shhhhhhhh.

Haters gonna hate, trollers gonna troll. I recently had somebody go through my story list and one-bomb nine of them in one day. A note to the site had sweep took them all away, of course (thanks, guys!), but no doubt the troll felt briefly happier with itself afterwards. Small children like to break things; it's the only way they can substantially influence their environments. I suspect there's a lot of this in our trolls.

And why would they comment, anyway? That takes work. There is, to be sure, an upper crust of trolldom which will shriek venom in the comments section, but for most of them, writing would strain their feverish brains.

And demanding an answer would lead to the other related questions in such a creature's life: "Why, oh troll, did you spray-paint obscenities on that bridge abutment? Why did you throw a rock at that stained-glass window? Why did you overturn the headstones in that cemetery?" To such questions, there can be no answers.

Interestingly I got two comments, anonymous of course. One was a complaint that the characters enjoyed the sex and the other was there wasn't enough reluctance. The latter I can see. I have noticed that in order enslavement series that ratings dip a bit where the slave accepts their lot and gets gratification. Personally, I would like to see slave stories have their own category, but I know there's probably not enough activity to justify it.

The other clearly was ignorant of the submission guidelines.

Although why is a mystery, I think there's a subset of people who like to skim till offended and act accordingly to "punish" the offender.

Sorry, but that is like expecting your client to kiss you before he zips up and wanders off.

I'd be much more interested in feedback from those who vote 3 or 4. Knowing what didn't quite work all the way for them could be useful. Readers voting with a 1 are either too far removed from the kinks I portray, or they are simply hateful assholes. Neither would provide useful feedback.

Stick to ‘simply hateful assholes’. I’ve yet to meet somebody who will plod through an entire story worth only a 1 and if you haven’t finished it, you’ve no business giving any score.

I had one comment along the lines of, “Terrific story, but I don’t give 5’s, so I’m giving it a 3.” Um, yeah, thanks for coming out.

I don't think those leaving a "1" plodded through much of the story.

I have one follower who often leaves a comment along the lines: 'Great read. Top story. I give you four stars.'

What!? Doesn't a top story deserve six stars? At least. :)

Obviously someone who doesn't understand is that, under the Literotica system, anything but a 5 is a negative vote, since "hot" kicks in at the nonvote 4.5.

With the new story page and its description of the stars, it is only going to get worse.

I'll admit that I tend to only vote 3, 4, or 5 - anything below what I think is a "3" is usually such a monstrosity of poor writing that I haven't the patience to finish it. And I make a point of only rating stories I've actually read.

In actual practice, something would need to be sociopathically warped, illiterately bad, or possibly both to get a 1 from me. Perhaps I'm too forgiving.

I tend to vote five-or-nothing. I’m willing to vote, saying that this is a darned good yarn. I’m less willing to trust my judgement in saying that it isn’t. Silly, perhaps, but that’s just me.

I tend to do this too unless I feel so strongly that it does not deserve a "hot" ranking that I feel very comfortable giving it a 4. I've probably given a few 3s. I can't recall ever giving a story a 1 or a 2 because I don't finish stories I really don't like and I don't vote on stories I don't finish. I never give a bad score just because I don't like the subject matter or object to the plot or outcome on moral grounds.

LOL, that's adorable! :D Imagine a world where everyone was so considerate and rational!
Jokes aside, I do almost exactly like you, but sometimes, when some story feels very poorly written because lack of effort, I give it 2 stars (but only if it's short enough that I can finish it in a few minutes) or 3 if the idea was really good, but in such case I always leave a comment with suggestions and observations. I think it's what authors really need: tough love if you will.

I don't know if you're a (relatively) new user, or just somebodies new/alt account, but there's damn near no pleasing the things that read LW. I've said several times I want to post a story there, I know they will hate, and purposefully write it that way. It seems to make them happy. It's probably the worst section to post in. I don't even look at votes anymore, all mine are between 2.X-4.2.

New account, since I finally got the writing bug again, but I’ve been reading Literotica since the early days. And yes, I’d learned to ignore the ratings for LW stories.

I was deliberately over the top when I posted there, too. And I expected the reaction. Just not the immediate Pavlovian intensity. Apparently, unless you ruin the unfaithful wife’s finances, reputation, and life, you’re a cuck and a wimp. And they’d really prefer that she ends up in prison, tortured to death, or sold to a Mexican bordello, though the more merciful ones might let you keep her as a frequently abused sex slave.

I’m still writing. But unless I feel like poking the animals again I’ll stay clear of the LW cesspit.
