If hot air rises, does cool air fall?

It's going to be 95 degress today and the downstairs airconditioning unit isn't working. Would it help at all to run the upstairs unit?

Maybe if you put the upstairs on and put a fan at the top of the stairs blowing down that might help.

Cool air does "fall", and running the upstairs air conditioner would help, but how much depends on its capacity and how the air flows in your home. You would probably want a fan to help move the air between the different floors.

It would also depend on how well-insulated your house is.

The hot air rising may push the cool air out rather than have it circulate. A fan would definitely help.

Hey, a fan is a good idea. Thanks you guys.

The upstairs unit is much smaller than the main floor one, so I don't know how much good it will do.

The repair guy is supposed to make it out today, but I know how busy they get on the first hot spell of the summer, so I'm not holding my breath.

Yes, but the stairs would warm it up and you would feel no effect. Carry the upstairs unit downstairs, expending great energy and creating heat. Turn on the air conditioner downstairs.

Take the hottest things downstairs and put them upstairs.

Downstairs will get cool fast.

(You will be upstairs, obviously. )

uuuuhhhhh.........did u ever try that ?

I wouldn't run that airconditioner if I were you. It isn't going to help significantly. Just pull all the shades and keep it dark inside. Don't run electical gizmos. Take off your clothes. Masturbate a lot. That way, being all hot and sweaty won't be as much of a drag.

How about if I just come rub ice cubes all over you?

A serious answer!

Yes Ruby, the cooler air will quite rapidly flow downstairs and the warm up, depending on temperature differential! If you don't believe me, go lay on the floor in front of your refrigerator then open the door.;)

Rhumb:cool:

I would run the AC, on a low setting.
The heat can build upstairs and drift downstairs. The AC, itself, probably won't help cool the downstairs. But, letting heat build up definitely doesn't help. Close the blinds and curtains. Fans. And more fans. I hope they fix it soon!!

Ok, so, I'm to get naked and masturbate while Azure fans me and Caroline rubs ice over my body?

I could get into that. :)

Actually, the cool air from upstairs is drifting down. Unfortunately, not completly into the office, where I am, but it's helping.

The air guy was just here and confirmed the freon (sp) leak that I suspected. However, HE can't fix it, of course. He needs to get the guy with the leak-detection unit out here to do that, which may or may not happen today or tomorrow. Fuckers.

You didn't use the "Hey, Asshole. If you didn't notice, I'm hot" card, did you?

It's perfectly fair to do so and I encourage it, except against me.

My AC is broken too Ruby. Fortunately, my house is surrounded by trees, so all the shade helps. It was only 85 in here yesterday!!!

The bad part is, my puter is upstairs in the finished out attic. It's never cool up here. I sooo need a window unit.

I feel your pain, Girlie.

Last summer in CT I thought I would die. The fucking house had no air, not even window units. It got full sun and by 2pm the upstairs was sweltering. When the kids all got heat rashes, I threatened to take them and move into a hotel unless my husband at least put in window units. Those things don't help much, but it's better than nothing.

Well, the guy came back and gave it another look. Said he found a loose nut and put some coolent in it. Blessed cold air is now flowing into the house.

Patient1, thanks for asking. They are much clearer and feel pretty good. I went against doctor's orders and put in my contacts today though. (I hate wearing glasses all the time.) I can feel it still in my eyes with the contacts in, so I'll only wear them limitedly.

Just a brief physics lesson now that your problem is resolved:

Hot air rises because cool air falls. It is the denser cool air that is pulled by gravity under the less dense hot air that pushes it up.

Correction: All air falls, as it is all affected by gravity. Hot air settles on top of cool air because it is less dense.

(think we can nitpick this any more? :) )

Yes, we can. The laws of physics state that hot air moves to cold air.

If your downstairs is hot, then you have the problem of it moving to the cold air, and pushing some of the cold air up.

What you need is to exhaust the lower level hot air out in a way that you can draw the cold air down. So not only do you need a fan, you need to have a vent or window open downstairs for about an hour to suck that lower level hot air out instead of up.

So just having every window in the house open and all the ceiling fans on is the best I can hope for, right?

Anyone know an AC repairman that'd work for sex? I'm broke.

Girlie, without air, the best you can do, is to open the house completely up at night and close it completely up first thing in the morning, closing all windows, blinds and drapes as well as turning off all lights.

That's what they do in Mexico and it works.

I don't have curtains on any of my windows.

Going outside and turning on the sprinkler sounds really good right now.

Yes, it is a hot one today out there.

I think that you should seek a shade tree after a nice romp in the water.

Rinse, repeat.
