I am hosting a "family" dinner for Christmas eve with a few friends and some family in for the holiday. Kids are going to be present as well. ( aged 6-17 ) No particularly fussy eaters on hand.

I'd like some ideas for what to cook for dinner. I can cook very well,,, I'm just short of ideas for this year's get together.

I'll have all day, as well as the day before to prepare this feast. Turkey and ham are out, as they are to be served on Christmas day for dinner.

The only things set in my mind is fresh made breads and a spinach salad with apples, walnuts, raisins, strawberries, colby cheese and pears.

ANY and ALL suggestions will be appreciated. I am just too brain dead this year for some reason.

Thanks!!

My suggestions would be some thing along the line of buffet style cold cut deli meats and vegtable trays. My thinking for this is seeing as there is a big meal going on the next day you may want to keep the Eve dinner more of a light snacking style meal. and with that a more relaxed atmosphere seeing as usually Christmas day dinner is sometimes fancy, good silver and all.

What about lasagne or stuffed manicotti? I was going to suggest a roast, but you'll be having turkey and ham the next day, maybe something other than meat would be in order?

Just a thought....

Hey, CW You'll all be pigging out the next day, so my advice would be to go LIGHT! Soup and salad with your home baked bread would be a real winner.

Plain old, no frills chicken and noodles. Warm, hearty, flavorful and guaranteed to have your guests STARVING come Christmas morning.

Thank you, I've missed you too.

That's for the wonderful ham recipe of yours I will be using Christmas day.

The family tradition I follow...

Is a Beef and Rabbit stew, with onions and garlic, potatoes and other odds and ends of veg thrown in.

The only advice is from my Grandmother, who got it from hers (or so she said) it was important to get the proportions right.

It should always be even portions for the meat.
One Rabbit, One Beef.

You can laugh now (we always had to).

When we would get together for Christmas Eve we would have little smokies...cheese and crackers and then a main theme like mexican or italian..the lasagna would fit in well with italian as would french bread and other dishes

One easy thing for mexican is nachos and a taco bar..
just an idea..hope it all goes great for you!

My aunt and uncle were married on christmas eve, so every year we have a huge bonfire and have smores, hotdogs, and fireworks.

Of course, you will probably want to forego the fireworks, heehee, but i think a cookout is a great idea. :)

Besides, kids love burgers and hotdogs.

why not seafood ???

nothing beats broiled fresh grouper...or bake-it
if you prefer... or poached in lemon & butter..mmmmm

there's always shrimp/crab/oysters/lobster/calamari
just some ideas...

then there's salmon steaks...grilled...mmm
or tuna steaks....grilled...mmm

or ahi tuna...pan seared & served with a little wassabee...

hell it's allgood...you could always order out...
why cook...sit back and relax...have everyone bring a dish....
order pizza or chinese...fuck 'em...

just kidding....wish you the best of luck !!!

We usually do a Christmas Eve thingy...cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, chips and salsa...lots of light stuff, because we have a huge breakfast and dinner on Christmas.

I love the lasagna idea...it's a little heavy, but I might try it this year anyway...don't know yet...depends on my "mood".

This year will be three days in a row of family crap...I don't know how I'll feel. :)

WOW!!!!!

You guys and gals are the best,,, excellent ideas one and all,,,

KE,,, hope that you enjoy it as much as we do,,, if the dragon ever sets you free for a minute or three, my email is always open.

Okay, I'll buffet it this year, that's certainly a change.

Pistol pete,,, seafood on a buffet sounds fine to me,,, can't ever get enough of seafood,,, maybe peeler shrimp,,,

CurlyGirl,,, fireworks after dinner is what we'll do, thank you!!

poetrylady4u,,, lasagna will be the buffet feature this year,,, I was leaning that way,,, your suggestion was the third one in favor, so lasagna is on as well.

Ezzy,,, one whole rabbit and one whole beef??? maybe equal weights of each might work,,, so I'll did about and see what I can figure out,,, or I'll just invent my own receipe

Indy_dark,,, the buffet idea is excellent! Thanks.

JHolley67,,, maybe french onion soup? Or maybe just as you suggested, chicken soup of some sort.

CelestialBody,,, I'm HOLLERING,,, I'll send an email later just to be sure you heard me.

Toadman,,, very good idea for a buffet,,, I can do that easily.

This is what we have with side dishes of linguini. It's simple and easy to prepare.

I have a recipe around here for "Moose Stew For a Crowd" if you want it.

It's a little more work thatn you might want to go into though. It starts with "Put the bullet in the gun, and shoot the moose."

CW...I'm coming over for dinner...not for the buffet, for you silly!!!

*smooches*

coming in late....again.

I have a great recipie for Lamb & Lentil stew.
French Onion Soup is always a big hit in our home as well.
Let me know if you would like either recipie.

I can throw a few cookie recipies your way too if'n ya need them LOL

And even if you don't, get them anyway. Those Chocolate Crinkle cookies were to die for! Thanks, (((EM)))!

I could pass along a good fudge recipe, as I see we are talking about cookies too. I made some last week (fudge that is) and it is sweet but it is good. :)

Chuckus?

You cook, too? THere must be SOMETHING wrong with you. What is it!?!

Xmas eve dinner, is at my grandmother's every year. She does the whole italian fish thing. Make me vomit! Luckily she also does a variety of different pastas and breads.

Xmas dinner has been my duty for the past couple years. Always stuffed shells, or lasagna for christmas-ever since I can remember. It's just too soon after thanksgiving for turkey again, and ham is set aside for Easter. Besides that, I hate ham!
