I'm currently in the process of taking over/reinvigorating a local Creative Writing society and I was wondering whether anyone had any ideas of what to do for the first meeting. It'll be in a room in a pub and a few people will know each other in random clumps. We'll have the start of the meeting in terms of votes and some beer... then what? Anyone got ideas for something fun?

Suggest that each introduce someone they know, or maybe even just met.

This is Dave, we've known each other about five minutes, and he's already told me he uses adverbs profligately.

This isn't fun at all, but a practical suggestion: bring something to write on. I was involved in something similar, and there was a lot of enthusiasm and an endless list of suggestions at the first meeting. Fortunately I scribbled like mad and got it down, letting us go back later and pick the ones we wanted to start with. Otherwise, it all goes out with the beer.

*nods* Or name and something unusual about self - amazing what you get with that. Or just name and what they're looking for from the organization.

beer is good......maybe some drinking games associated with writing something creative.....I dunno....My brain is set to stupid....

How about this, have them split up into pairs, chat for five and then write a quick fictional blurb where the other person is the hero/heroine or the villian....Read aloud or allowed, whichever is applicable...

And yes Liz, my brain has been farting all day. I need anti-gas pills for the mind...

Wait a minute... no periods of nervous silence? Glancing at each other wondering if they're here for this thing or some other? Wondering if you were supposed to bring something because everyone else seems to have a pad of paper and pen handy...

I suggest you jump up at the start and say, "Thank you all for coming tonight. I know it's difficult for many to admit their problems but attending this group dedicated to supporting others with herpes (or some other embarrassing affliction) is a proper first step...." See how long you can go before someone stands up to leave or says something...

(ten thousand writers out of work and everyone wants to be a comedian...)

Break the mold, Earl. Print out a few of your porn stories from Lit to have some of the hot girls in the audience read.

I'm sure that it would not only break the ice, but melt a few buckets.

Hello Manx. Haven't seen you around in a long while.Where've you been?

The erotica thing is tempting as is the 'Introduction to Herpes Support'.

I was thinking along the lines of 'Half a Man'. I can see the room being half-empty by the end of the first line at my singing, then completely empty after they realised what the lyrics were.

Lurking? Well, yes and no.

Been very busy the past many months, with R/L and work. It's certainly been more than year since I've been here, but I did start posting again a month or so ago. I've finally had a chance to look up from my hole in the ground to see the light at the end of the tunnel--it's not an oncoming train.

And, yes, I certainly do recognize many of Lit's finest authors still posting here, as well as a lot of new blood and great talent. ;)

Unfortunately, I'm still here, but I'm sure one of the fine authors will start talking to you in a minute. :D
