See Wiki for the background including some of the controversies.

If you're involved in ownership or hosting of any website or domain name, you should be concerned about their ability to take your site offline at their whim, no matter how large or reputable your site is.

ICANN doesn't take sites off at their whim. They simply assign TLDs. There has to be some type of central domain authority for teh interweb to work.

It seems that one of the biggest grievances cast at ICANN comes from the megacorporations over the .sucks TLD.

Basically the only people paying for .sucks addy's are megacorps trying to protect their brand.

I.E.: Coke will buy "coke.sucks" and have a page that says coke is awesome.

On the flip side, ICANN approved the .xxx TLD.

Of course , a conservative group wanted all porn sites to be forced on to this TLD, and paid the fee to get it approved.

ICANN approved it, but only on a voluntary basis.

Of course porn sites and advocates of free speech don't like the idea, since any ISP could easily block the TLD if they get a religious hair up their ass.

I think I am against the elimination of public whois.

There are plenty of ways to own an IP anonymously, anyway.

Apparently I'm the only one.

It's OK, I also drive a car and know what makes it work. :p

They worry about icann and turn a blind eye to removal of net neutrality.

I have commented on that. It's gone, and so far none of the sky is falling scenarios have happened.

In fact, in the spirit of competition, it seems like b/w throttling and other restrictions are slowly going away.

Carriers must bend to the will of their customers. Who are sharks in a feeding frenzy of bits per second.

Fuck...I imagine a flood from foreign IP's.

(that are in no way connected to the recent banishments)

Except in areas where there is no choice. My provider sent out an update describing how their practices changed. Nine days out of 10 i got faster reception using my cell as a hotspot. Before the change...that was rare. Probably just happenstance. Not likely...

My choices are:

DSL, Cable, Satellite, or Cellular.

I am annoyed that there is only 1 cable choice.

(Territory, I guess)

Odd that I've been having trouble with THIS site loading tonight. Lots of timeouts and errors.

Ko-ink-y-dink?

ICANN doesn't take sites off at their whim.

Yeah, they do. They took down a popular and very reputable browser support site over the weekend due to some sort of domain registration verification whatever nonsense. Site's been up for nearly 20 years. They could have waited a few days and made contact to clarify the issue.

And yet, they did.

The home page of the site was taken over by an ICANN notice about the domain registration not having been verified properly. All pages were getting 404 'Not Available' errors.

There was no mention of a webhost or any other entity. Only ICANN.

So? Any host can put up whatever page they want. They could put up a page that says the UN has banned it.

But, give me a link and I'll whois it.

I understand the unease of having any type of central authority over such a public "utility".

But, much like the DMV, they are a necessary evil.

The whole damn internets should be unplugged.

I lived most of my life without it, and it wouldn't bother me in the least the live the rest of it without.

I think of the internet as the world’s library.

I liked it better when the library had no ads or commerce, and before the stupid people started using it.

I would like to see a Reference Internet with Information, literature arts and sciences etc; and a Commercial Internet for transactions, entertainment and so forth.

It's SUPPOSED to be that way, but in that area, ICANN is failing miserably.

Domain names like .com, .biz and so on are supposed to be commercial in nature. Domain names like .net, .info and others are not. How many state and local government sites use .com instead of .gov like they should be using?

How many sites use country based TLDs that are not located in those countries?

There's always wikipedia. :p

So , you first say ICANN is too authoritarian, but now they are too lenient.

I get it, central authority over a "public utility" upsets you.
