such a strange new world this is. steve reached out and took rivy's hands in his.
"don't rub your eyes. you'll just irritate them more." he held onto her hands, searching for something to say.
"you haven't done anything wrong. it's just, well, uh, it's so embarassing. you say you're not used to kindness from strangers. i'm not used to being alone with a woman. i am so scared of doing something to upset you. you made no attempt to cover yourself after you showered. you were so matter of fact trying on the clothes in front of me. you had to know i could see you. i was nervous being naked in front of you and you can't even see! it felt so good just sitting beside you a few minutes ago, with my arm around your shoulder and then you moved away. to me, it seemed you'd rather be cold than be close"
steve released rivy's hands and paced around in front of her. he looked hard into her face, trying to read her mood. the firelight was dim and with her eyes still closed, he had no idea what she was thinking. he took a long, deep breath in an attempt to get control of himself.
"i don't know what to say or do with you right now. i know we've only just met and these have to be the most bizarre circumstances ever. would we have been close, or even good friends before all this happened? i doubt it. i've never been that lucky before. i know it sounds so "high school", but i wanted you to like me. i just got excited seeing your body and when you moved away, it was old times all over again. i was feeling sorry for myself and didn't want to go down the old road again."
steve's heart was racing. blurting all that out had been hard on him. he started to walk back around the hummer to get a drink. what did it matter whether she liked it or not. he paused just before opening the door.
"i felt bad for you when i first found you, all cut and bruised. it made me feel needed to take care of your wounds, the thing with the bear, i was scared for you. when i saw you on the ground, i thought i'd already lost you before i even got to know you. i didn't want to be alone again." he opened the door and picked up the bottle.
" i'll take care of you and take you to oklahoma so you can be around other people. anything you need along the way, just tell me and i'll try to find it. don't feel like you owe me anything. hell, it's easier to cook for two than one, anyway." he took a long drink from the bottle and walked off into the darkness.
