Now this is just plain wrong. I wonder just how much effort is being made to catch the thieves and what their defense will be. The Devil made me do it?

they are probably going to auction them off on Ebay or some other method of selling them

People do steal the stupidest things.

These are one-of-a-kinds. Who would handle them? Direct to a collector would be the only way. On Ebay, the whole world would see them, and the museum would too.
 
Something like this was probably either a speciality job for a particular buyer OR

A drunken prank that may or may not seem as funny in the morning.

(See how I'm growing by not assuming that the robbers are so stupid they'll try to fence it to the guy they stole it from?)

Actually, no, the last one is far more likely.
