On another thread The_Fool comments that when he gives a story a 5 vote, it's because he feels that he wishes he'd written it.

Not quite the same thing as wishing you could write like (or better than) that, which is probably a common starting point for posting stories to the site. It was certainly my reason for starting.

As I thought about it I realised that there is but one story that I've read on Lit. that I wish I'd written.

It's not a style I write in, it's not a subject I've covered to any extent, it's not a story I would ever have written, but I wish I had.

Co-incidentally it's the only story on the site by this author.

Of The Deepest Dye by Victoria Veiss is the story I'm thinking of.

Let's add to everyone's 'must read' list.

Which single story do you wish you'd written?

I also wish I had written any of the stories I'm currently still working on. Sheesh.

Fine idea, Gauche, my answer's easy. On Lit. the only stories I wish I'd written are by SoupWarsProejct. Some of them are on the Snipps thread (see link below). I am disturbed at the moment as I cannot find SWP in the author index, hope it's just a glitch as I've read them all.

For me, SWP has a style and content amazingly fresh and full of life. "Her" characters can seem disturbing or fearsome at times, but the writing imbues them with a basic humanity and tenderness, and humour. That's a gift in itself.

I cannot praise this writing enough, it's the best on Lit. for me. It's not the writing itself, I couldn't wirte like that to save my life, but its spirit and love that I wish I could put forth in my work.

Perdita

Edit: gave it a 5, Gauche. Amazingly passionate piece, alive characters, mood swings galore, sex afire.

Dear Gauchie,
DG is crushed. She thought sure you would choose "Me and Mom."

To tell the truth, I haven't read such a story as yet.

I don't wish I had written any particular stories by other people. I just wish I could write characters like this lady.

PS: Usual disclaimers; I am not a relative and I don't know her, I just admire her writing.

Thank you, snooper. I just went and refreshed my memory of her writing. I've read it over and over and can't seem to get enough.

I do not wish I wrote a complete story like someone else. I just wish that my portrayal of the sex could be as hot as that one there, or the characters could be as alive as in that one, that I could move the reader with what I wrote like that one, or I could make the reader laugh like that one made me. Too many different things to appreciate and envy in different stories and authors.

I don't think I have ever read a story I wish I had written, but I have read many where I wished I could write like the author or where I wish I had come up with some of his/her ideas.
