Actually, insofar as you're referring to partisan politics, they really can slime up what is otherwise a nice wholesome porn site. I mean the R vs D, "he said/she said" partisan crap. On the other hand, discussions about political philosophy or specific public policy issues aren't necessarily dirty, but they can be.

In general and with some exceptions we do a pretty good job at maintaining a civil discourse here on AH. It's something all AHers can be proud of even if you don't participate, because it's very rare.
