I went sking for the first time in 2 years and I hit a barrel. On one of my last runs of the day I got my ski tip stuck in a spot of mushy nasty snow and got thrown on my side.

I am sliding towards the edge of the trail into the woods. I have a choice of going over a couple foot drop and then into tree stumps, tree trunks and rocks or a big plastic barrel covering a water spigot. I chose the barrel and steered towards it as best I could. I thought I was going to hit it dead on with my stomach so I flexed my muscles and just nailed it.

My whole body wraped around the barrel and my skis went flying into the woods. I felt like someone with a 2 foot wide fist had just gut punched me. That was the worst ski wreck I think I have ever had.

The only time I have ever actually hit an umovable object while sking. My stomach is still all sore but I don't have any bruises and nothing is broken. I have had enough broken ribs to know what they feel like. All those sit ups over the past couple of years finaly paid off I guess.

Anyone else ski and have any horrible wreck stories?

I fell about 50 or 60 feet from the barrel and crossed the whole distance in less then 3 seconds, probably closer to 2 seconds, so I estimate that I hit the barrel at a speed of 15-20 mph.

Hell man you don't have to go to all that much trouble just to beat up a barrel!

Sorry , Azwed i don't do ANYthing that involves hitting objects with my body at a high rate of speed!;)

It has been pointed out to me...

That these barrels are placed in such places to protect the innocent from the danger of hitting such immoveable objects, as water spigots.

Therefore we hope that after you had attempted to demolish the barrel with your firm ab's, you made sure it (the barrel) was not damaged either.

Being concerned for the next person to come near this barrel I feel you should go in the AM and report your accident to the authorities.

So they can check out the safety of the barrel…

and get as good a laugh at the same time as you gave us.

Owwwwww

Sorry to hear about your accident, but relieved that it wasn't as bad as it very well could have been! I have never been skiing, and although I love winter and snow, I wouldn't venture too far away from the fireplace in the lodge!

You'll likely feel worse before you feel better. Someone I used to work with broke his leg in a ski accident (slid hard into a tree); took months for him to recover, but he went back to the slopes the following season.

It would have been safer to stay at home...

and hit the bottle...

:D

I am ok today. My thighs and arms are more sore from a bit of muscle strain then my abs are. They were still pretty sore last night but now they feel good. This is still the most sore I have been after sking ever though. I think it is just because I have not been sking in such a long time.

I did have one other nasty wreck on another black diamond. That one was more of a funny wreck then painful though. I lost it going over a vertical drop and ended up sliding down half the mountain. I was going so fast that I could not stop so I turned my body head first and went body surfing down the mountain. I was actually passing some skiers.

I went skiing for the first time in Colorado last year. Baptism by fire. I was handling my own towards the end, but the first two days were nothing by falling on my ass. I hadn't learned to control one's speed, so on some of those bunny (green) runs, where you cross blue diamonds to keep on track and pick up some speed, I'd fly out of control and end up wiping out or smashing into a hill side.

:p Great memories though. Embarrasing as it was, it was fun, and I can laugh about it now.
