I bought a Coltrane CD (Bethlehem sessions) at random the other day, and really like it, although it was a little too "big band" sounding, but nonetheless I thought it was good. I'm looking for other suggestions for really good classic Jazz a la Miles Davis, Coltrane, Monk, etc. Stuff From the late 50's and 60's I think. I'm thinking I really like this stuff, but need direction on building a good collection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll be your pal for life if you recommend something good, I promise.

Sure. Just do me a favour and don't become a jazz fan. Those guys are hard to deal with.

Lila by Lila McCann. What? You said to recommend something good. OH! You meant Jazz.

Do you own any jazz albums at all?

I have exactly three now. Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue, and the one I listed above, so I'm looking for basic, classic beginner stuff.

I'm not sure what you already have...

Besides Coletrain & Davis....

Try some Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Matheis, B.B. King, Fats Dominoe, Muddy Watters, Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, or perhaps some John Lee Hooker.

I'd rather you pick the album's.

I don't really care for basketball that much, but if I was a fan I'd be a Lakers Fan, thanks.

Hmm, I know those are all big names, but I was looking for specific album suggestions.

Jazz is freeform... its not about picking an album... because its going to see a band live any time...

Just go for the cheapies at random and you'll find some great stuff.

This is your experience.

I really hate to give opinions about music...

JOHN LEE HOOKER
House of the Blues
Mad Man Blues

FONTELLA BASS
Rescued/The Best Of Fontella Bass

ELLA FITZGERALD
The Early Years, Part I (w/Chick Webb Orchestra)

BUDDY GUY
Left My Blues In San Francisco

BILLIE HOLIDAY
Greatest Hits
The Quintessential Billie Holiday

HOWLIN' WOLF
Chicago -- 26 Golden Years
The London Sessions

ETTA JAMES
Second Time Around
At Last

B.B. KING
(whatever)

MUDDY WATERS
(whatever)

These are some really great albums. They get right in to the roots of blues and jazz. I urge you to just pick-and-choose at random because jazz is an individual preferance. If it comes right down to it, you can never go wrong with a "greatest hits" album.

Enjoy......

Enjoy......

Many of that is blues, not jazz:) There is an immense differance, yes?:)

IM going to put some time into this later but..........

I would stay away from greatest hits albums. Too muddled and do not allow you to form your own taste.

Howlin' Wolf is blues but damn he is a soulful mofo.

Dont be too unkind when I try to kiss you.
