I think I'm turning into a redneck: my Raw adventure

Last night we made the trek to Birmingham to watch Monday Night Raw live there at the BJCC. I must admit, right up front, that I wasn't enthused at all about driving an hour and a half to go watch wrestling, but my youngest is a huge fan, so I went because he wanted to go.

Yes, I realize most of it is staged, but the prospect of watching really well-built guys in teeny-tiny outfits wasn't that heinous, so I decided if we were going to go, I was going to have fun, whether I wanted to or not.

We had so much damn fun that I crawled out of bed around 10:30, and my throat is sore from screaming. The youngest didn't move until after 11:00. In fact, I don't think he moved once after I carried him in, asleep, from the car last night.

For years I made fun of people that watched "wrastlin" on tv, calling it a soap opera for guys...and it is, I suppose, but what I really underestimated was that watching it on tv doesn't even come close to what it's like seeing it live.

I didn't see a single empty seat in the arena. They were calling it a capacity crowd, so I'm thinking that's pretty damn close to "sold out." For those of you who have never been to the BJCC, it's probably one of the largest indoor arenas in the south, and a crowd that large makes one hell of a noise. It was impossible for me not to join in, especially when my son was having so much fun screaming and jumping up and down next to me. And...there's hot guys in tight clothes on stage.

There's tremendously loud, tremendously bright fireworks. You can feel the beat of the music through your seat, and I found myself standing up and screaming with the rest of the crowd, and enjoying every damn minute of it.

Jeff Hardy was there, and he's what they call a "high flyer." If you've never seen him perform, watch just a few minutes sometime when you get a chance (for a taste, this video is great - cool music, too...and damn, he's cute). I know it's called wrestling, but the man is a pure entertainer, leaping and twisting impossibly high off the ropes, stamping on the ring, clapping his hands, working the crowd to get louder and louder.

There were others there whose names will be recognizable to those who have watched wrestling even just once: Batista, Big Show, Randy Orton, Matt Hardy, John Cena (my son's favorite), MVP, and Rick Flair even made an appearance, garnering a standing ovation from the crowed.

I think my son has converted me, and I'm a fan - at least for the live events.

And there's hot guys in tight briefs.

Here's a video from last night (found on youtube, of course). Watch just the first forty-five seconds, and think bigger and louder...WAY bigger and louder.

Batista's my favorite:

Not that I would call you a sucker for hot guys in tight briefs....

Hey, there might even be an unexpected double entendre there...;)

Wrestling is my boys' thing right now. I can't tell you how many wrestling themed items we've bought from Christmas to now. They rarely miss a show on tv, and John Cena is one of their favorties as well (they also like Batista, Undertaker, TripleH, Jeff Hardy, and Rey Mysterio Jr.)

I don't watch it with them much. Mostly because I don't like all the "drama" they stage and every time I see Vicki Guerrero, I want to throw something at the television.

Well, the important thing is that you had some FUN!!!! Sometimes it happens when you least expect it. Ya know, I didn't have a high opinion of wrestling either until I watched Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler" recently, and I have a new respect for it.

You can call me that. It'd be true. :D

For some reason I detect a plot bunny . . . :)
Good idea!

Yep, same here, and Vicki was there last night. [insert gagging noise here] She's just nasty. One of my favorite signs there that I saw said, "Vicki gave me swine flu." :D

I haven't seen that yet, but I want to.

It really is so much fun to see live, if just for the energy of the crowd. :)

Cloudy,

Welcome to the Red Side.

I have been watching Wrassling for decades now. It used to drive my father nuts until he sat doiwn and watched it with me a couple of times. Then I introduced him to a couple of the Wrestlers I knew and he too started watching it. Hell even my wife watches it.

It's pure entertainment as long as you remember that it's fake.

Remember there are things worse than being a Red Neck. You could believe everything that is printed in the Scandle Rags.

My older brother (6'5" 325 at the time) took his boys once to a WWF event. One of the wrestlers came up to him after a bout and said he'd be great if he ever wanted to get in the game.

I can't watch wrestling just because I'd get teh giggles thinking of my brother as Mankind (Mick Foley).

and he would so kick my ass for laughing but I can run faster than he can.

I almost wish that pro wrestling had been this big when I was the age to be a Diva.

I would have loved it. :D

Come on over here and you can be a Diva as I wrestle with you.

I prefer women's wrestling. Stacy Keebler comes to mind, although she may be out of the biz by now.

Last week there was a news item about Hulk Hogan's health dilemma. Apparently, he's so torn up he can hardly get around anymore, and he's in constant pain. That's what I think about when I see the antics of the WWF - and the NFL.

Regardless of the downside to the participants, it is entertaining.
