Blues got its start with W. C. Handy (Memphis Blues, St. Louis Blues). Great historic blues singers include Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and Chippie Hill. The recordings of Jelly Roll Morton are also important for illustrating the transition from blues to jazz.
Jazz grew out of blues and soon multiplied in a hundred directions. Traditional jazz started in New Orleans and Chicago, then New York. King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington kicked it off.
From there, swing took the lead with Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Erroll Gardner, Fatha Hines and Art Tatum.
