I'm on my sister's PC, mine crashed last week.

It won't start unless in safe mode.

All this week it's beeped starting at the same time everyday, and the beeps last an hour.

I disconnected power while it was beeping, because it stopped the beeps last night. Tonight, it won't start unless in safe mode.

Mine is costing me fucking hundreds to fix, I can't afford another PC... anyone know what's wrong?

I've replaced the memory battery on the mother board, but it's still beeping :(

Run scandisk and defrag in Safe mode and then try rebooting. If it still won't boot in normal mode, then run SFC (START-> RUN -> "sfc.exe.") It will ask for the Windows installation disk to repair corrupted files.

As for the beeping, check the scheduled tasks (Control Panel -> Task Manager) for a task that's schedule at the time the beeping starts. Try disabling all of the scheduled task to ensure that one isn't on a varible scheduling.

From your previous description of the problem, I don't think it's a scheduled task but rather something outside of the computer that a monitoring program is detecting -- like a power brown-out warning. If you have access to a multi-meter, you could check the household power when it starts beeping to see if that's what the problem is.

What version of Windows (I presume) are you running?

If XP you can run restore back to the day before the beeping started. Unless the problem is the power supply. If it is going, then you will get continuous beep.

If another version of Windows, have you tried starting in "Last Known Good Configuration" ?

The user's manual should have a beep code listing.

ALSO, check this site:

You might try asking for help on the "How To" board. There are some real techno geeks who hang out over there, and they might be able to help.

Thanks, I'm writing this all down!!

It sucks when you ask a question then can't get back to read the replies!!

And it's Windows 98 she's running.

I'll give the run exe thingy a go. Thanks.
