Thanks for all the advice everyone. But BDSM is really not my thing. That story is a rewrite of a piece I did a few years ago on the request of a friend. I felt the story deserved a rewrite, but it just wasn't a story for that catagory. I seriously doubt I could write something worthy of accolades there.

If one uses elements of bondage and dominance in one's work, how do they decide if it's enough to qualify in the BDSM catergory? And if it isn't, where the hell else does on stick it?

I've not noticed the BDSM crowd being picky. My stories get GREAT feedback. (Only one posted as Tatelou - I will say no more than that.) Then again, I do write them from personal experience, and focus a lot on the thoughts and emotions of the sub, as she is put through what she is put through by her Dom, and the power-play that goes on - a big part of it, for me. I've also written from the POV of a Domme, and that worked well, too - for me!

I think the thing can often be that, some people think adding a length of rope to a story makes it BDSM. That couldn't be further from the truth. It is the exchange of power, the willing submission of one to another, and the extreme emotions that both partners (or more) go through. There doesn't even have to be any bondage or spanking of any kind going on, to make a story D/s.

I once wrote a story with a D/s theme, so I thought it would do nicely in there, but after reading a set of random samples form the site, I thought better of it. It had no chains and no floggers, which seemed to be mandatory there. So I added some more character building passages, and snuck it into Romance instead. Had no problem whatsoever and recieved great reader reactions on it.

It's a nice piece, Dran (didn't PC, but voted), and I can't see how it might not be considered BDSM-y enough. I wrote a story that had fewer BDSM elements than yours and it was fairly well-received.

Maybe you need to catch the crowd on a good day or give it enough time to find its audience. There are plenty of romantics into BDSM.
