It's always nice to have your talents recognized. Most of us enjoy that pat on the back when we get it, which is why I try to give as many as I can to those around me. Today, when I was feeling a bit down and unsure of myself, I got one of my own.

I have returned to college to complete my BA in English, and have started work on my Master's in an "overlap" program, but I will be "officially" a grad student in August. While talking with one of my professors after class today, I mentioned that fact, and she asked me if I was staying here. After telling her that I was, she asked me if I would consider working with her on the university's peer reviewed literary/creative writing journal. Would I? This is a coveted assistanceship that grad students fight over, usually going to a 2nd year, and she is asking me, before I am even official. I didn't hesitate to give her a enthusiastic "Yes".

She went on to say that she would be happy to write one of my recommendation letters and that she would make sure the "powers that be" in the department knew the quality of my work and my abilities. Then she topped it off by saying, "although, it's not really necessary because you're so highly thought of in the department," and proceeded to name professors who had mentioned me by name.

I really don't know what I said at that point, because I was ecstatic about what she had said and the prospect of an incredible assistanceship. I must not have been too incoherent, because she wished me a happy weekend, and headed off to her next class.

That's a nice Valentine.

That's a head burling moment. I hope you mumbled appreciatively and didn't drop down and kiss her feet :D

Congrats :rose:

Oh fanfares and fireworks, my lady! I won't be at the party tonight but I'll have Sven and Olaf bring over a barrel of their finest to toast the occasion. Well done, girl.

Um... no. I think I will save that info until my first day.;)

One professor with whom I am friends knows, and actually, I don't think this one would care. I have had her for another class, "Love and Lust in the 20th Century Short Novel", so I know a bit about her preferences. I have not ever had any classes in the creative writing side, and I'm looking forward to working with the MFA program.

I ought to take that course. Pity Texas is so far away.
