All you computer savvy types, I need some assistance here. We compacted the files on our computer, defragmented the system, and some of our basic files disappeared, like the Paint program, games like Solitaire, Freecell, etc.

I'm not sure if there's any way to restore these files, but if there is, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!! I don't know any other program as basic as Paint that easily crops pictures for AV's, so please give me some help here.

Thanks :rose:

Use the Restore program. Set it for a time before you defragged.

Well, I'm not quite that educated. How do I get there? If I restore, will it fuck up our computer again?

All RESTORE does is set things up like they were on a specific date. It should restore your missing files. Your computer sets restore points on a regular basis, so you can 'restore' stuff that gets lost or whatever.

If you arent sure what to do, call a reputable computer store tomorrow and see what they recommend. But RESTORE always works for me unless I picked up a virus that deleted all the restore points.

On my puter I click START, click CONTROL PANEL,click PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE, and click SYSTEM RESTORE.

Okay, that sounds reasonable.

How do I access the restore program on my computer since I have no phone?

Paint, Solitaire and Freecell are on your windows installation disk and you can use ADD/Remove in the control panel to (re)install them from the CD.

Check out IrfanView: it's faster, and more accurate at resizing/resampling than MSPaint is and can handle about six gazillion more image formats to expand your possibilities.

I didnt get a backup disk with my PC. What a bummer. Someone stole it out of the carton at the store..

Harold, thanks for the link as an alternate to Paint.

Damn, I don't have a backup disk either...and if we do I don't know where it is. Can I go to Best Buy or somewhere and get a disk replacement?

Thanks for your help, guys.

Windows XP

Start,
all programs,
accessories,
system tools.

When using system restore more than once, always undo back to todays date before restoring to another date.

My start page must be different from yours. I have XP too.

Nope, it has to be the windows installation disk that windows was originally installed from and the proprietary sytem restore (backup) disk that comes with computers like HP, Dell, Compaq and others isn't recognised as a "Windows Installation Disk" by the "add/remove windows components" wizard.

(it's stupid and paranoid, but that pretty much decribes M$'s licensing policies in general. :()

Ooooh, I have XP Pro. I thought XP Home was the same or similar. The other OS's that I have played with are really similar for the sys tools, but then, I usually customize the hell out of an OS to suit me almost immediately after install.

I tried it your way and I get the same results, but CONTROL PANEL is on my START page and ALL PROGRAMS isnt. Both get you to the same place.

I RESTORED my system last night, to make certain I wasnt talking out my ass, and it restored a bunch of stuff I thought I deleted from the computer. It even restored broken links and several little problems I had.

But let me tell you, if you ever get a nasty virus, the virus will fuck you by deleting all the RESTORE POINTS. And you either need the original disk or you gotta take it back to the box with the Dooms Day button( FROM THE FACTORY OPTION). THAT! wipes out EVERYTHING.
