I just moved, and the speakers that I was using with my computer worked fine before I moved. now I'm trying to hook them up to my computer and I can't get any sound on them. I plugged them into my boyfriend's laptop and they worked fine.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with the computer or my speakers; I just think that I can't figure out how to configure it or something. I vaguely remember having a similar problem when initially hooking up the speakers, but since someone else did it for me, I didn't see how it was done. I also tried plugging in other speakers to my computer and they didn't work either.

Can anyone help me out?

speakin of speakers

They could work. They ought to work.

But getting audio to fly can sometimes be tricky. Go to your desktop and pull down the help file for starters. There is an audio or sound troubleshooter in there somewhere. That is the place to begin. Follow the steps, and hopefully you will be in the sing of things.

If not, post back on some of your particulars. Operating system, audio devices, and that sort of stuff. As it stands you havent provided sufficient information to solve this puzzle.

Be patient, be methodical, and good luck.

Thanks, but I already tried that and it didn't work.

My OS is Windows 98SE. I have Creative SBS20 speakers, and my Sound, video and game controller is Videum PCI Adpter. I think my sound card might be Sound Max. Is there any other info I need to provide?

It sounds like you're mis-reading the labels on the sound card sockets -- try the sockets next to the one you think is the speaker connection.

Some sound cards have a "line out" plug that has the same sort of graphic as the speaker connection on other sound cards have. the Line Out connection is for an amplifier and won't work for most speakers built for the amplified Speaker output.

Thanks, WH, but I've tried it in all 3 sockets and it hasn't worked. :( I tried looking to see if there are any other sockets in the back, but there don't appear to be.

Start by firing up an mp3 (not a music CD) and once it is playing take your speakers and plug them into each of the three sockets indivudually, if this meets with no succes try the same thing again, but this time with a pair of headphones, also pull up your audio settings (double click the volue icon in your system tray) make sure that the level are all set to about the middle and nothing (except the microphone) is muted, let me know if that helps at all

I did that already with the speakers- it didn't work. I'll try with the headphones and see what happens.

you might have a setting wrong in your mixer settings. Sometimes the master volume gets muted for no reason. Happens on my computer all the time..check your mixer settings under start/programs/accesories/entertainment->volume control
