Excuse me for posting something that has already been posted, but despite my understanding of how a search engine goes, I usually find it lacking in information. So here is what I have to say and ask:

First off, I'm familiar w/ labels and everything, but I personally would not be open-minded if I stuck to the labels and stereotypes of society.

For a long time now, I have always been against getting piercings. However, recently with my new haircut, I have come to look at myself in the mirror and see my right ear pierced (illusion, peoples) and the kind of earing in my earlobe is one of those small diamond earrings.

Lemme make sure this is understood, I do not, I repeat I do NOT have ear piercings. I am saying that after my new haircut, I have imagined one of those small diamond earrings that guys wear in my right ear.

So, I thought I'd look good with an ear piercing. However, remember the whole labels and stereotypes? Good, then you're still with me. I have heard lots of things and it has gotten confusing. So I need help interpretting all of this stuff.

MY understanding is this: (Also it's only for guys, not girls)

If you get your right ear pierced, you're gay.
If your left is pierced, you're straight.
If you get BOTH pierced, you're most likely bisexual, but straight.

So... people tell me if I want to get my ear pierced, get my left ear pierced, otherwise get both pierced. However, as I have been saying, I think I would look better with my right ear pierced and I do not go with the whole stereotype/label thing. On the other hand, it's a SOCIAL thing, therefore I must follow it.

Now, what am I asking? I am asking for help on the RIGHT social meanings of ear piercings as whether or not MY understanding is correct or not.

I also realize that looks can be deceiving from mirrors, but I also know that if I really don't look as good as I THINK I would, then I can always remove the earring and the hole will heal up.

Thanks in advance for any help given!

Personaly, i find it very sexy when a man has peircings of any kind...
I really dont care which ear or both for that matter, i wouldnt go with the lil diamond earings though i suggest hoops, not great big ones, they have alot of awesome hoops for men. :)

I know what you mean by the hoops thing. Like I said, I'm open-minded, but I was only saying what I saw in the mirror. Thanks for the advice, I'll give that some thought as well.

I think it was something like that when ear piercings were more rare with men. Now they are so common that I doubt it matches very well anymore. I think many take "wrong" side on purpose just to annoy others who look too much on those labels.

Im talking about situation here of course - might or might not apply there. :)

what your talking about kinda faded out in the mid ninties. when i go to concert i can easily find men with one ear or the other done, or both done. the labels are now applied more by what type of piercing you have done, or what you have to it (ie; strecthing). but i will give this advice, go to a tatoo and piercing shop and talk to the poercist there, as he or she can give you much more information.

So does the image in the mirror, have it's right ear as you see it or it's left ear as you view it with the earing, (in your mind)?

Don't forget the image in the mirror is reversed, so if you see it in the right ear of the image it should go in your left ear to match.

I meant my right, not the mirror image's right. However, because of the cartilage difference in both ears, and since my left ear looks better, I think it might be best to have my left ear pierced.

Since I work near a licensed piercer, I am planning on talking to them either before I come in to work or during my break.

Thanks again for the help! I will appreciate any more help given.

HC: back in the 70s (i think), among gay men the code used to be left=top, right=bottom (IIRC). all that's out the window however, these days, AFAICT. depending on where you live, any ear piercings could attract the attention of gay-bashers, to tell you the truth.

This is a really good point, particularly if you live in Redneckville, like I do.
