Who said, "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains; round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

---Percy Bysshe Shelley

I was going to use that poem in a conceptual art project of mine, where I used the periodic table of the elements to spell out a sonnet.

Unfortunately the periodic table doesn't have a q. :(

Phrodeau, I know I've said on a few threads before that i dislike poetry in general, but if I have to pick on that's my favorite, Ozymandius is it.

Thank you for posting it. You gave me a big smile. =)

ughh not to poo poo your art but the peroidic table mixed with poetry would just make me gag.

Two of my list favorite things mixed together.

You just don't understand the deep implications of the juxtaposition of literature and science, while at the same time pinpointing the formulaic and structured considerations of both. :p

Amen.

Edited to add: Not many people do. ;)

Pyper, personally I think it sounds kinda nifty and cool. I'm imagining the initial letters starting with the elemental symbols in like illuminated text style artwork...that'd be totally freakin' cool.

You could always skip Q. Nobody would fault you.

If this was a Shakespearean Sonnet, I'd reply to this thread. But, since it's not, forget it!

I happen to like the periodic table and all it stands for. Without it we would be in the dark dark ages. And...next to Byron, Shelly was pretty good at writing.

If it was any other science or technical field besides Chem I would be all over it.

I just don't like chemistry and my poetry skills are pathetic.

I agree with Nora - skip Q. Or just use it as a Question mark.

;)

Edited to add: I just looked at all the elements on my t-shirt - I can't believe all these years I didn't know there wasn't a Q.
Don't tell anyone or they'll take back my degree for certain.

Well Az, I guess it takes alkynes. ;)

A friend of mine working on a project was actually just asking my advice on what to do with the materials he has.

He has 250 feet of one inch wide clear plastic tubing, a very powerful sump pump and a large tub to hold water.

We were trying to come up with ideas to make a moving water type sculpture. Ideas of writing his name with the tubing then pumping dyed water through them got thrown around.

Moving the tubes with a wire and pulley system and continously pumping water through them.

Using black lights and UV sensative Dye and/or gliter combined with some sort of shape.

See what I mean i totally missed that pun the first two times.

I am not sure what the GPH(gallons per hour) of the pump is but I know it is pretty damn high. I really like the idea of using a small electritic motor and pulleys to move the tubes around to create a designs.
