Just a little news piece and commentary from a new favorite site: Feministing.com. I've even subscribed to the newsletter (as if I can afford the time, maybe I'll let go one of my foody blogs  ). - Gru

First transgender student runs for prom king.

Awesome. Fresno High School senior Cinthia Covarrubias is believed to be the first transgender student to run for prom king:

"School officials this week added the 17-year-old's name to the ballot for prom king, reversing a previous district protocol that allowed only males to run for king and females for prom queen.

Gay youth advocates called it a landmark victory for campus gender expression and said they believe it's the first time in the U.S. that an openly transgender student has run for prom royalty."

Covarrubias didn't make the cut when the winner was announced on Saturday, but achieved far more by running. "I'm happy I actually made a difference about changing the law and the policy so you can run for your choice," said Covarrubias.

You're a king to us, Cinthia!

RANDOM UPDATE: I couldn't help it; the lovely Feministing contributor Gwen Beetham pointed out a line in the article that I would have to deem the Ignorant-Ass-of-the-Week quote (which also made me laugh out loud): "I like lesbians, but they shouldn't be allowed to run for king," said senior Erich Logan, 18. Classic.

I don't know if she's technically a lesbian--lesbian would be a woman who is sexually attracted to women, but this person is trangendered. That means they see themselves as a male, not a female...and we have no idea what sex they're attracted to.

(edited to add: Ah. That explains the title! And you're absolutely right!)

But this gives me an idea. I think we should have an AH prom King & Queen...gender and sexual orientation unimportant. Hmmm...think I'll set up the thread right now!

Stuffed sock, salami? Make your own toys, bub. :p

Actually, I have some doubts that he or she is really a TS. From what I read elsewhere, there is no hormone regimen involved. I can't help thinking, to be a committed TS, that would be a minimal requirement. She just looks like a girl that prefers wearing men's clothing.

By the way, if that's what she wants to do, I certainly have no objection, or any other opinion on it.

Err, Box? AFAIK most doctors won't allow hormone regimes to start until a person "stops growing" or something like that. That, and there has to be a cooling off period between deciding to embark on the TS journey and beginning hormone therapy.

Again this is just from what I recall. I may be wrong :)
