I know what's hot. Do you want to know, too?

Should author be able to designate their own personal favorites with an "A" letter?

Every author has stories or poems that he or she considers their best work, regardless of how well they did in terms of voting. Would you like to know which stories a given author likes best, among his or her work?

The idea here is that an author could add their own "A" (Author's Favorite) to complement the "E" (Editor's Choice - aka Laurel's), "W" (Contest Winner), and "H" (Hot = 4.50+ in voting) letters. This would signifiy the author's personal recommendation for what they think is their best work.

FYI, this idea started in another thread, where it was suggested as an "R" rating (Recommended). After a night's sleep, I think "A" is a better choice.

An author would have (almost) free rein to assign the "A"s and move them around among stories, and add and delete them desired, and as their body of work grows over time (what I was proud of last year may be something I'm embarrassed about this year, etc).

A limit on the number of "A" designations would be in order, of course, to avoid the "everything I write is wonderful" conceit/overkill. Something like no more than 1 for every 10 stories that you've got posted. For some of us, that may be the equivalent of having to choose amongst your children, but any system without any limits would quickly lose its significance, in all likelihood.

Another limitation that I think is important is that no story can be given an "A" designation until AFTER it is ineligible for the regular monthly "best" contests, and that no special-theme contest submissions can be given an "A" either. This would help to level the playing field for those competitive souls.

Only "well-aged" stories that are over the "new list" horizon and are part of the great "backlist" of your portfolio would be eligible.

So we'll ask here, for both Readers and Authors, whether you'd like to have Laurel add this feature to Lit.

LOL

I sometimes think anything you post is attracting trolls.

Seems like a good idea to me. What I consider my best is not highest rated.

:( :D

Hell, whole people I consider good are not highly rated. The votes are skewed.

Give me one A per ten or per dozen (to be non-metric) and I'll know where to put it.

At least with other authors' work we can add them to our favourites list, and they might pop up on the new-coming-shortly 'Favorites Portal'. The A is probably the only way to indicate what we feel good about in our own work.

I like the idea as well. It's a useful way for an author to differentiate what s/he thinks is the best work; it's also perhaps a good way to direct readers to what one considers one's more characteristic works. I still cringe at the thought of someone reading my series work and deciding that that was the embodiment of my literary aspirations. It would be nice to be able to direct them to stories that I like better.

"A" Versus Favorites

In reference to Alex's comment about how this would be comparable to how we can declare Favorites for other authors or for specific stories; what we are proposing here is essentially the same thing for the author.

I suppose we could all declare certain of our own stories to be among our Favorites (I don't think there is any restriction against it now), but somehow that doesn't seem quite right.

Mixing the two together would dilute the value of the Favorites function, and it could easily escalate into a list-inflation exercise, since there is no limit on the number of Favorites you can declare (at least I don't think there is a limit).

Sin.

The problem that I foresee is that I have different favourite stories for different reasons. I have two favourite strokes, a favourite 'literary' piece, a favourite experimental, each of four poems are favourites for four different reasons I can't pick one or two favourites out of I think 23 submissions.

True, but isn't that sort of a "workable difficulty"?
