What exactly does the red "H" mean? I've seen some people say that it means the story is "hot", and I've seen other answers. I've also seen some people say they "vanish fast". So, does anyone here actually know what they mean?

The "H" means "High Scoring." I think it's for stories with average votes above 4.5. I assume that as the average falls (and it ALWAYS does), the "H" goes away.

When the "H" disappears, it goes to a holding pen for reuse. There are those who think this is cruel, but the recycling makes good ecological sense. The "H"s which are waiting for their next assignment are decently fed and watered.

Sheesh, MG

You were ragging last week, so why the (comical) nastiness today? It was good for a giggle, but unfortunately, you pulled one into the quicksand. Mean girl, you.

Wantonica,

MathGirl wasn't THAT bad. Of course, we're all grateful (whether dead or alive) LR didn't ask about the infrequently seen, letter "W".

H stands for:

An average voting score of 4.5 or better. The site does this automatically so that those authors who may not be doing so well on the voting average can slam you down in time so that they can win this months contest. LOL Sorry, heard that somewhere. But truthfully, if you are going to run a monthly contest, then you shouldn't post those H's until the month is over with, don't you think?

There's my lead-in.

Hello, could anyone tell me what a 'W' or 'E' means by a story? Laurel actually told me once but I forgot.

Honestly, people. Put your mouse on the "H" graphic for a couple of seconds. It has a mouseover label that tells you what it stands for.

H = Hot (4.5 and above avg. rating, evidently)
W = Contest Winner
E = Editor's Choice

I don't know how Es are assigned; that you'd have to ask Laurel.

Es are assigned when Laurel likes the submission.

In retrospect, I concur.

Happy day,

Of E, W, and H lore

The "E" is not encounted in the wild. It's found only in the Lit.com breeding facilities.

Selective breeding has produced this peculiar letter, and it is far too fragile to exist outside a controlled environment. It is produced by artificial insemination of a female H with sperm from a male W. Actual physical contact between the two species is to be avoided for obvious reasons. The mere process of arificial insemination is so frought with hazard that the E remains a rara avis. The E, of course is sterile.
MG
Recent attempts to induce parthenogenic reproduction in the E by in vitro hormonal means have produced mixed results. Thus far, the only viable progeny has been a small, feeble lower case italic "b", and we all know what that means.

MathGirl,

Has "E" cloning been attempted? And is there any truth to the rumor that a bunch of scientists (whether mad, Christian, or unemployed hasn't been determined) are pursuing a fiendish scheme of deviant hybridization in hopes of transforming the otherwise unoffending "M" into a reformatted breed of killer "E's"?

Inquiringly,

Dear Rumple,
Yes, this was attempted several years ago. The uncontrolled proliferation of Es caused the fermentation tanks to rupture, and the consonants were overwhelmed. It is only recently that the R has made a comeback and is no longer considered endangered.

the only other thing I have to contribute on the "h" criteria is that it must also have a minimum of 10 votes. For some stories (incest anyone?) that takes about 5 minutes. For others, 10 votes can take months to rack up (5th chapter of a series for example).

Sigh...to someday have a W.

Is incest a popular category?

from my experience, incest will get the largest number of hits in the shortest period of time.

Incest is followed by group sex and lesbian sex as the top three in my experience, although incest as most popular category is pretty common consensus

Poetry of any kind, romance, and how to's have gotten the lowest number of views for me, anyways.

Dear DN,
I wrote a "how to" piece several months ago. It has become one of the most frequently read things I've ever done, and I get several feedbacks per week. Is that like an exception to the rule?

Yes, I think so. And IMO because it's exceptionally well written and detailed.

FYI, people, it's called Pussy Shaving 101; a must if you have a shaving partner.

Dear Perdita,
Gosh, thank you for the nice words.

I think so...because it's a useful how to...not all the how to articles are helpful. But then, you're MG...you get exemptions like that ;)

Oh, my goodness, my gracious. I had no idea. And she's such a sweet young thing. Do you think penicillin may cure it?

Obviously, but don't ask me why. The thought of doing my bro makes me sick! Then again, I met my dad at 25 and he wanted to do my travel companion. Sheesh.

Happines,
