Ok so there is this song I've had stuck in my head for a while now, I think it's called Spirit but I'm not sure at all, on top of that, I have no idea who sings it but it goes something like:

Cause I got a friend in Jesus...and when I die *something something* rest...I'm gonna go to the place that's the best.

Someone please name that song.

Spirit in the Sky...

original version by Norman Greenbaum...covered by a lot of people, most notably Dr and the Medics...

When I die I'm going up to the "spirit in the sky"

Spirit in the Sky. Sorry I can't remember who performed it.

I love this song!

Norman Greenbaum---Spirit In The Sky

When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best

Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best

Never been a sinner I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up with
The spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best

You guys are my god, I love you.

:D

Ok so now this has become a two part question, I didn't know there were a few versions. The one I've been hearing has a very distinct female vocalist (possibly two or so) singing in the background. Any clue which I'm thinking about?

Dr. and the Medics probably. I know of no other version currently besides this one that has female vocals...

I love that song. have it somewhere in my house. eather on my comp or on tape.

Greenbaum wasn't religious either.

I've always thought that musically, it was the perfect charicature of a rock and roll song .
