check out this photo essay, based on a book called Girl Culture. it's a study of the fears and problems that american girls face, and i found it pretty disturbing. not surprising, just disturbing.

here is a quote from a book review:
The hierarchy of acceptable attributes is spelled out by one self-described Southern Belle, who prizes her "Southern-girl standards" above (almost) everything else. "I would rather be dumb than a slut," she announces, "but I would rather be a slut than be fat or ugly."

Reminds me of Mr Freakys daughter. It's sad.. and I hope someday (soon) she realizes there is more to life.

No more words was an 80's song by berlin....a coincidence? Perhaps not.

thanks for the post some interesting storys to go with the pictures

the swim team one was interesting for me as lisa used to be on the swim team ... i wonder if guys do prefer non-athletic women

i think part of my problem with this story is that it divides girls into two categories: 1) thin, pretty and boy crazy 2) not, and depressed about it. while there are many many girls whose lives are like those depicted in the article, there are happy, well adjusted people out there. but stories about them aren't sexy and they aren't shocking and so they don't sell.

while i agree there are problems that need to be addressed, i feel like all this attention is starting to normalize dysfunction.

i do think it would be great to have a photo eassy like this of showing people that aren't the stereotypical magazine girl (just about everyone) and showing how normal and happy they are

like someone said though its easier to write a really good sad song then a really good happy song (think it was one of the beatles)
