I have no idea what a hash tag is.

#hashtag

A hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol #,[1][2] a form of metadata tag. Short messages on microblogging social networking services such as Twitter, Tout, identi.ca, Tumblr, Instagram, or Google+ may be tagged by including one or more with multiple words concatenated, e.g.:

#Wikipedia is an #encyclopedia

Hashtags provide a means of grouping such messages, since one can search for the hashtag and get the set of messages that contain it.

hope that helps :)

This is a pound sign £. This is a hash #

In the US when they press the pound key they mean #. Perhaps you were being snarky or just didn't know.

Is it like noodles became pasta? Still curious.

# I thought is was a pound sign. Anyone know the history?

I know that engineers at AT&T called the symbol the octothorpe in the early 1950s when touch phone pads were being developed. Other than that, it's anybody's guess.

He just didn't know.

You know Brits, they don't know any better.

It pre-dates that by several decades.

The "octo" is for the 8 points on the symbol. And "thorpe" was for Jim Thorpe, the incredible athlete.
