They climb the deck to get into the tree and then they jump on the roof. It sounds like the 101st Airborne is landing. What can they be doing? Hunting squirrel?

Why, secret cat's business, of course!
Mine do the same thing..straight across my roof to the neighbours..it seems to be part of cat pride, to never touch the ground unless absolutely neccesary
The pigeeons have started to collect tiny pebbles and drop them on the cats from up there too..ping! ping!PIng! then THUD..SQuawk~..silence

maybe you need to plant a cat shrubbery for the cat?
Mine stay off the roof at night when the catnip and mint are all in head..they're to busy defending their stash to do too much gallivanting around..ROFALO..seriously..

Red-wings, but we do have owls.
Our cats are country cats (i.e, barn cats) and they do the strangest things.
For example, clawing up a 40 foot tree to chase birds, even though they left at 30 feet.
And the worst part is, my dogs are better hunters.
We do not have squirrels or rabbits for the cats to hunt.

my cat's nuts too..OOohhh Owls..owls are totally fantastic too..my favourite is the australian tawny frogmouth..we have a family of them that nests every year at my parents place..they're soo clever, such good hunters and great at looking like wood..LOL..those huge beaks are awesome
he he...one of my cats is a fomer feral case..she's really happy now, i've had her for years, but she still does really odd things occasionally..bit like your barnies
she'll hunt styff thats' not thereher son's the same
..they're both ginger which makes her quite rarebut my fat, lazy, very domesticated tabby..once let a bird go that had landed right in front of him..he looked more startled than the pigeon..LOL
