When you post a story here and it has the letter H in a box by it, what does it mean?

I thought it stood for 'Hot'. But I could be wrong.

Maybe it's me. I mean, I understand why some people might be jealous that their baby isn't the clear favorite. They react by going around, voting their story up while lowering others down.

Honestly though, who has the time?

I'm on dial-up, so perhaps the realm of cable/broadband is so lightning-fast it boggles the mind. Maybe going around, hunting other's stories in competition with yours to lower their scores isn't time consuming at all then.

Even so, aren't there better things to do with one's time?

Then again, I don't vote for my own stories. One is sitting at 4.49, and I'd love to give it a little bump.

As far as competition goes, I am the only one that I feel the need to compete with. It makes for better writing. Thanks to all that have replied.

I only have the one story posted thus far, but it never reached a 4.5 rating that I know of. In fact it started out at something like an 3.87 the first time I looked, then steadily rose from there. But my first look had something like 29 votes on it already if that counts.

You'll probably find (guestimating on 3.87 with 29 votes) if you'd managed to see the first 10 votes you would almost certainly have had a H . That is unless every single reader thought the story actually was worth 3-4. This seems unlikely, if someone thought it worth 4 then at least one other thought it merited 5.

No help (you can't find out) and not really any consolation.

Most of my stories end up under 4.5...

But after a month has gone by they start to climb upwards, and soar. So if you get anywhere near 4.0 in the first month consider yourself lucky. In fact it's probabaly best not even to look at your scores for the first month that a story is posted.

Thanks for the "H" explanation. Ok, so my short stories have nothing beside them, while a "how to" I wrote has an "H" next to it for almost 2 months.

Oh well, c'est la vie in the dog eat dog world of fiction......

Are you sure. Perhaps you missed the small print, and what it actually says is "Your Piece" this category starts with the letter 'H' .
