My trailer sits roughly one hundred feet from the front entrance to the park. My trailer also fronts onto the main road. The main road is what I call a Shotgun Road. Two lanes heading each way seperated by an island. In front of our entrance is a break so people can pull into the park. (They often use this cut as a place to do U-Turns.) Because of this I get to hear the screaming tires of near misses as well as witness the results of too many accidents. Last night was no different.

I was sitting in the living room reading and thinking about heading for bed when I heard the tires scream and then a loud bang followed by more sounds. It sounded like it was coming into my living room. AS I headed out the door I grabbed a flashlight and my jump kit. When I stepped onto the sidewalk I could see the cars sitting in the entrance to the park.

As I approached I could clearly see the vehicles. One was a Dodge Ram Pickup, it's front end was crunched and dropping fluid. The second vehicle was a Mini-Van and it had been hit in the side and was sitting in the bushes. The van was closest to me so that was where I stopped fist.

In the van the driver and passenger both were sitting there dazed. Their Air Bags had deployed and the interior was filled with smoke. I couldn't open the door so I popped the window and checked on them quickly even as I checked to make sure they were the only ones in the vehicle. Even over the smoke from the Air Bags came the unmistakable stench of booze. I told them to keep still and went to the Pickup.

Again the Air Bags had deployed and again the doors were jambed. I had 9-1-1 on the phone and was describing the scene even as I was checking the people out. The passenger of the truck started screaming they didn't need me calling 9-1-1. When I asked the driver of the truck if they were injured he told me they weren't. When I asked if there was anyone else in the truck the passenger started screaming at me. She wanted me to get the fuck away from there and leave them the fuck alone.

Within minutes the first cruiser showed up and pulled in behind the truck. The officer saw my Jump Kit sitting beside the Van and asked me what we had. I told him what I had seen even as the passenger in the truck continued screaming at me. (She wasn't happy in the least.) Rescue as well as a couple more Officers arrived.

The doors were popped and everyone was checked out again. I watched with interest as this was done and then the cops moved in. Both drivers were given breath tests and failed miserably.

Final results were:
Two Drivers arrested for OUI.
One passenger arrested for Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and Assault on an Officer.
Two Vehicles Flat Bedded.
One Passenger driven home by Cab.

Thankfully no injuries this time.

I finally got home about an hour after and soon went to bed.

What? No one arrested for shaving their crotch while driving? I'm disappointed.

If we could only arrange things so that drunk drivers would only hit other drunk drivers, with no collateral damage, the world would be a much safer place. For sober drivers.

Oh, yes.
On the other hand, if they were to hit large, solid, inanimate objects like a wall or a large lump of concrete well away from inconveniencing others, I'd vote for that.

I do too. I have seen what happens when they hit the car with a 4 year old. What happens when they hit a two year old. What happens when they hit a 12 year old. In every case, the child died. *sigh*

The drunk drivers had no injuries.

The one that hit the twelve year old got life for vehicular homicide, leaving scene of accident and he dumped the body out of his El Camino after she landed in the back of it. There were other charges plus this was his third strike...with hitting someone! *double sigh*

What pisses me off is the number of people arrested for DUI who've had DUI convictions before. Why are these people even allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle again? We all have our state governments going on and on and on about "cracking down on DUI," well, why not permanently revoke these people's licenses and take away their cars at the first conviction? Why continue to give them chance after chance after chance? People know by now how dangerous people driving under the influence are. Too many have had a loved one killed by one of these people. So why are they EVER allowed back on the street?

I think after so many convictions you get to spend some years somewhere where you cannot get to a vehicle. A few years back a local news channel did a segment on people with several DUI's. Some of these people had lost their license for life and were not allowed to register cars if they bought them. One guy had something like 20 DUI's and was still driving with no license, a five hundred dollar beater car he had not registered and no insurance. Another lady with ten DUI's was driving on a revoked license and someone else's car. It doesn't matter to these people that they have no license or means to get a car, they still find a way to drive.

Actually, it's quite rare for someone to spend time in jail for DUI unless they injure or kill someone. If they can't register a car, they get some homeless person to register the car for them. If that doesn't work, they steal a license plate and drive until they get caught. Most local judges don't want to provide free room and board for DUIs.

It`s all about court leniency...

In my neck of the woods I read the Court Docket section of the local paper. It briefly lists who was convicted of what and the court ordered penalty. When it comes to drunk driving there is a mandatory one year suspension of your driver`s license. However, you see this being handed out for the tenth or twentieth time in cases. Being caught driving drunk while your license is under suspension for drunk driving gets you a...wait for it...one year suspension of your driver`s license.

I have heard of cases where someone gets serious prison time after their fortieth conviction. On the other hand I`ve heard of cases where a drunk driver kills someone and gets off with...wait for it...a one year suspension and a suspended sentence.

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) has been advocating for real sentences for drunk drivers and has basically nothing to show for it. This problem will likely never go away but it would be very much reduced if the courts took it seriously. So far, I see no evidence that the courts take it seriously.
