It's free speech.

But, more importantly, it allows anyone at a glance to recognize a fool. And there's a lot of value in that.

So, to that girl protesting at her school: buena suerte!

you would not believe how many rebel flags fly here in australia!
they're everywhere!

dumb.

That's because they're too chickenshit to fly it here.

Part of the reason their ancestors lost the war.

clarification: it's australians who are flying the flags.

my mistake :)

What I find interesting is the same people saying that Americans should only speak english - only have one language, are the same ones wanting to ensure their right to fly a different flag.

The Confederate Flag that is seen is actually the Battleflag, the real flag was totally different.

I think it's good to remember history, especially the history of a war that was totally distorted by propagandists afterward (especially since Lincoln jailed anyone who wrote differently) It means different things to different people, and to the uneducated, they think it stands for slavery

We see a lot of them here and I'll never understand why. We're in the north!
And why would anyone display the flag? What are they trying to say?

It actually stands for World Peace...

Well said. I really like this.

It stands for state's rights and the doctrine of interposition, and by voluntary union, not one done by the end of a bayonet

It's not totally different. The Southern Cross features prominently in the second and third versions of the confederate flag. Only the first didn't have it and that one didn't last long.

Actually it's the cross of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. I don't believe he stood for any of the things you mentioned.

It's actually an enemy flag of the United States, but I don't think the people that display it are able to grasp that notion, so it's harmless...

That's a little too involved for a symbol.

I doubt a majority of the people I see waving it even know what "interposition" means.

That may be what the flag stood for at the time of the Civil War, but the flag gained popularity as a backlash to the Civil Rights Movement. More Southerners started waving that flag in the 1960s than before. That is why it's associated with racism, bigotry, and segregation.

Remember that guy in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie, the dude that had his arms and legs chopped off one by one and kept insisting he wasn't defeated yet?

There's your Confederate flag...
