Saw a season of this old family series in Wallmart and I remembered liking it so I picked it up. "I Dream of Jeannie" was origionaly on TV in black and white in 1965 and went color in 1966.

Watching it this time around I was extremely surprised at the Master Slave relationship. More than Barbara Eden just calling Larry Hagman Master, what really pulled me in was the obvious love they have for each other. Jeannie's desire to do his bidding, protect him, and improve his life was so forthright I found it facinating. Tony Nelson's desire to protect, care for and help his girl improve herself was so self evident I found myself nodding along at his words.

I also found it hilarious that Jeannie is a complete brat. I must say not only did I enjoy This immensely but I would have to say that if you have ever wondered what a Daddy Dom relationship was like I would point to this as the Archetype. Though I will add that if my property got me in as much trouble as Jeannie got her Master into she'd spend alot more time laying on her tummy. Chuckles.

Never new how I got turned onto this lifestyle but after seeing this show again and realizing how much my current relationship with my girl mirrors the values set forth in this show, I'm now sure how my journey began.

I would be very interested in hearing your comments on this show and your recollections of how you began your journey in this lifestyle.

Have fun ~~ Jo

LOL, I am sure that programme has a lot to answer to for me. Not sure I see it as a Daddy Dom type relationship as he was more than aware she was very much a woman, even if more than a handful. I used to love the relationship between them where it was obvious he was in charge, well at least theoretically, and he would look out for her welfare in many ways but also was more than happy to have her serve him. Funny how no-one in those times ever raised an eyebrow at the whole theme of the show, in fact saw it as great viewing for children, and yet if it was receiving its first airing in these times I am sure they would be jumping up and down with a long list of complaints about morals and politically correctness.

Damn. I was really hoping there would be visuals on this thread. ;)

To tell you the truth, Jeannie always just seemed to me to be a sexy version of Lucy Ricardo. Aside from the lead female's costume and physical assets, I never saw much of a difference between the two shows.

I always found Barbara Eden to be totally adorable, but to me the Jeannie personality was part ditz, part manipulator. I just don't find that appealing.

And Hagman was so easily pushed around, tripped up, and manipulated that I found him frankly pathetic. Ricky Ricardo with a cooler job. But in both cases: guys who were being laughed at, not with.

weren't most of the shows back then pretty much the same? i know that when i watch them they always seem the same - one ditsy female partner and one stronger male figure... female disobeys male's wishes and hilarity ensues when she can't handle the situations she's created for herself.

I saw this show as fun and silly but Col Nelson needed to take charge damn it! He drove me NUTS not doing so.

Was it telling that I always hated this show in syndicate rerun?

Barney Miller was where it was at for me. I was clearly a child of the 70's.

Bump

Jo... I don't even know what to say to this really. Lemme think on it and get back to you.

I can certainly see where you're coming from, but I agree that the male characters needed to be more take charge for my tastes. (Jeannie, Lucy, Bewitched, etc.) The men seemed to kind of bumble through things, blustering about giving orders that they knew would never be followed but kind of lying to themselves about it all. I guess they had a bit of D/s flavoring but not enough male dominance for my tastes. However, I did love watching them.

There's a Skinamax take off of "I Dream of Jeannie" which I reviewed, in part because it gave me a chance to talk about the TV series and how different times were when it was made.

Linky-linky.

Jeannie did call the man Master, but I didn't consider her very submissive in her actions... The male didn't strike me as a very dominant man either.

He was a bit on the wimp side in my opinion.
