the BBC all night radio has just broadcast this little titbit...

There is a submerged atomic bomb, more powerful than "Little Boy" which was dropped on Japan, 50 miles off the Georgian coast.

It was apparantly jettisoned by a B47 in 1958. The location is known but the authorities say (and this is the scary bit) "it's too dangerous to move".

This item come from recently released secret documents.

Dunno about you but if I were there I'd want to know a bit more about it!!

I think that tidbit will be placed neatly in the "let sleeping dogs lie" file. It's not half as scary as driving home on 285 every afternoon.

I don't think I could ignore...

an atomic bomb almost in my garden which is "too dangerous to move".

I reckon I'd write a couple of letters to my local congressman or whoever, about it. After all it's not a secret anymore as the files have been opend to the public.

I mean, although you torment me, I don't want to lose you in a mushroom cloud!

:D

And my letter will accomplish what? Make you (and possibly me) feel better for having written it?

If they've decided it's too dangerous to move, what are the other options? Common sense option - leave it alone.

Tell you what, if it concerns you so much, you write the letter and I'll send it. My concerns right now are teaching a group of 5 year olds to recognize their names and geometric shapes. Everything else is just background noise.

Do I get a gold star?

the "too dangerous to move" part is probably because the casing is so corroded that it would disintagrate if they touched it, letting all the plutonium.... or whatever is in it escape into the ocean...

Doesn't pass the smell test for being a real story to me.

Don't any of you wonder what an ATOMIC bomb was doing that close to Georgia in 1958? Does that sound correct to any of you?

I hear the Japanese are about to teleport the Pre-Godzilla T-Rex there to save him from being Godzilla. Of course, they know nothing of the bomb, which will leak the hazardous radiation onto him that they had been trying to avoid, and he'll become Godzilla anyway and lay eggs in Madison Square Garden. I wouldn't make any big bets on the Knickerbocker's home games.

Site some sources, sugar plum.

Oh....

it's there....

from what i understand it....

um......

sort of............. fell off of the plane that was carrying it...

Oops....

Where in the world?

Maybe they meant the other Georgia?

If anyone has been to tybee island it wouldn't be a waste if it did go off. It has probably sunken so deep by now it would be more of a danger to bring up than to let be.

But there will be a rouge missile fired at London in the next five years. We'll shoot it down but it will cost you.

Thanks MG. I found some stuff on it in yahoo and geeknewsland. There are representatives on it right now, as well as the Navy, airforce, and spin doctors.

Thanks for the heads up pp.

Well I think a lot of you all anyway...don't want to lose anyone from Lit...

Now back to when the British Empire was...:D

ya know.....

it ain't gonna blow up.....

the wiring got eaten up by the salt water a long time ago.....

the biggest danger is from any leaks that would develop if they moved it.....

it's most likely in a couple of feet of mud, which is probably helping hold it together...

if they try to bring it up they'll probably try to move it and whatever's supporting it as a unit...

The West Nile Virus is a concern. Mosquitos love me, if there's one within five miles, it will find me to bite. I'm using insect repellent every time I go outside now.

I hear ya MG. I am the same way. A mosquito magnet. I can't believe they would come after me- I thought they wanted someone who was sweet!

I had a scary experience once on a trip to Africa. I was sleeping under a mosquito tent-my arm must have been pressed right up against the netting all night long. I woke up with over 80 bites on my arm!

Of course I was on anti-malarials, but it was still a scary thing!

And why can't I be a money magnet instead????

some of us have the curse of being born beautiful instead of rich!
does that explain it to you?

 all i know is i dont fit in to either category!

The Bomb was carefully placed....

If radioactive materials leaked into the environment, the sudden rise in mutant freaks would be alarming.

Except in Georgia.
