LOS ANGELES, April 29 (Reuters) - About 30 U.S. Marines in southern California on the biggest military base in the United States have been quarantined after one of them was confirmed to have contracted the swine flu virus, the Marine Corps said on Wednesday. The case was identified at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center and was confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the base said in a statement.

The base has 8,000 active-duty Marines and is the primary training center for Marines and sailors deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. The ill Marine is being treated as an outpatient at the base and will remain isolated at his barracks. "He is doing well, and his condition continues to improve," the base statement said.

About 30 other Marines who had been "active socially" with him are being quarantined as well, the statement said. They will be permitted to return to full duty after five days if they display no flu-like symptoms, it added. "The Marine Corps, along with all of the armed forces, is monitoring the health of our force to ensure we're taking the necessary precautions to educate and safeguard military and civilian personnel, as well as family members," the statement said.

At a Pentagon briefing earlier in the day, Marine Corps commandant General James Conway said the ill Marine at Twentynine Palms had not been to Mexico, where as many as 159 deaths have been attributed to the virus.

What makes you think you will ?
There's enough Vaccines out there. Have a look at Wiki on Anti-viral

I hear you. Hey, we had the first case in Nevada right here in Reno. We have the distinction of being one of the first ten U.S. cities where it's been confirmed. I always knew we were someone. Anyway, it was a 12-year old girl. She hadn't traveled out of the state, but the newsies have pointed out that she was in day care. I thought it was a cheap shot. She's doing fine.

We've got one confirmed and one unconfirmed case here in Michigan. A few people I work with are in total panic about it, too. I mean, yeah, it spreads easily, but if you're not near anyone who has it, you have nothing to worry about and most of the cases reported here in the U.S. have been from people who've recently returned from Mexico.

One girl has even gone so far as to wear latex gloves and a mask every day. She's a germophobe already and this just put her on high alert.

I do worry about getting it, although I know the chances are slim that I will unless I come into contact with someone who has it.

And an FYI in case no one has watched/listened to the news today, the CDC doesn't want it called Swine Flu. They want it called H1N1 because it's actually a combination of swine, avian and human influenza strains. It's actually Influenza A H1N1.

They can want it all they want. Too late.

Tell her the masks don't do a damned thing to help, the virus is small enough to slip right through.

Yeah. And it takes too long to say H1N1. No ring to it. If they want to change the name they need to talk to writers like us to come up with something catchy. Get it? Catchy! :D

You want the poor woman to stay at home with door and windows locked, don't you?

Well, yeah, I know that. I was just mentioning it. Kinda like when Prince changed his name to the symbol thingy and said to stop calling him Prince. Uh...yeah, too late, dude!

Now I call him "The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" :D

But anyway, we're not talking about him. The media will call Swine Flu whatever they want, regardless of what the CDC says. There was a press conference here in Michigan today with the governor and even she kept calling it Swine Flu. Even after she made the announcement that they shouldn't call it that by request of the CDC. Okay, whatever.

We've tried to tell her that, but she doesn't get it. It's kinda funny watching her wipe everything down constantly. She carries a ziploc baggie full of wet naps (or whatever you call them)

Well, we can make a derivative of H1N1 and call it Hiney Flu. At least to me H1N1 looks like it'd be hiney in textspeak.

Wait a sec...is this one of them gay diseases like that AIDS thing? Do I got to go lesbo again to avoid contemplation?

Nine confirmed cases here in Illinois with at least one in my backyard.

There aren't vaccines for this yet for the general public. Baxter's said they may have something in 3 months, but that's a real gamble that they'll get it right. There's something around now that's a good guess, but there's not a lot and they're saving it for medical professionals.

Okay, that >is< good behavior! Wiping down fomites--inanimate objects people've touched--with something mildly disinfectant is a good way of preventing exposure.

Yeah, I understand that. But she wipes down things only she's touched with latex gloves. And she's done this forever, even before this outbreak of swine flu.

I do know wiping things down is a good thing, but she takes it to extremes.

My physician told me that this particular strain of flu affects young persons the most and that any medicine that can relieve the symptoms has been on back order for 8 weeks.

Best thing to do is wash your hands, use disenfectant wipes on surfaces others have touched (shopping cart handles for example), avoid crowds and watch out for people who cough and sneeze and don't cover their mouths. Yuck!!

Gee with the furniture market we only had 75,000 visitors this week
Half from overseas
Wonder when it breaks out here?

Breaks out? You make it sound like chicken pox. ;)

Gizz works in an airport and I may as well since I spend half my working day at the airport too. I'm wondering when they're going to shut the airports down here. Not that it'll do any good...

I can just hear my boss now.
Me: "I'm not coming in today. I need to take my husband to the doctor; he's got flu symptoms."
Him: "Oh yes, that's quite alright, I don't mind, in fact, why don't you just take the next two weeks off?"
Me: "I can do that."

Just today in San Antonio, we had three schools and a daycare facility closed for the time being because one child turned out to have swine flu. The schools were those his older siblings attended. As well, the kid's parents were ordered by authorities not to go to work, and their workplaces were notified.

With a confirmed death due to the flu right down the road in Houston, local peeps aren't taking chances.

How many cases of swine flu in a city of two million would it take to shut everything down?

Probably not many...I've been wondering the same thing about Chicagoland. We have three schools here that are shut down now too.

When this whole thing broke a couple days ago, I sort of rolled my eyes thinking that authorities were being too alarmist, too careful. I at first saw shades of SARS and another South Park episode on the way.

Now, though, I'm thinking this could be as serious as the CDC is afraid it could be. Especially concerning the general tendency of most people's apathy.

Does this mean I don't have to worry about work deadlines anymore?

Interesting choice of words. ;)
