I dont recommend hanging

I was told once that, "If you hang long enough you get used to it" :)
 
I always preferred hanging to chin ups. You only have to do it for 30 seconds to pass the PT test and you have to do like 5 chin ups otherwise. Hanging is vastly easier and you don't skin your nose on the bar because your biceps hurt so much you're crying.
