I don't normally read this, but...

The PCs in the portal sometimes begin with "I don't normally read (insert category) but this story blah blah blah etc."

I often wonder why they picked this particular story. Anyone have any ideas...or have you done it?

Most times, when I read a story in a category that I wouldn't search for a story, it's because someone posted something about it.

There's a thread here titled "Am I a Pervert?" I read the story that 75corner wrote titled "Making Ends Meet" I'm not into gay male. The proper place for a dick is in me.

On the hand, not being sexually aroused by a story makes for a more refined critique.

I suppose when a certain story receives a lot of feedback and is highly ranked in the top lists, people are curious about what all the fuss is about.

Yep, I think that's a big draw for some. I got a very nice PC on my halloween story that started out, " I don't normally read horror stories but the number of comments got me curious...."

I will read stories in categories that don't normally interest me if there's a really catchy title or clever description, or if I hear good recommendations from folks I trust.

And I try to read all the contest entries. Though, to be fair, if I don't like the category, I will generall skip voting on them, figuring I'm not qualified to have an opinion in those cases.

I read stories in categories I'm not drawn to if I like a particular author. I might really enjoy reading one of his/her stories, and then check out some of the other stuff they've written. Even if it's not my thing, it's a pleasure to read a good author.
