I don't miss...

That is something to not miss!!! Hooray for you. :rose:

I loved turning 30. It was fantastic. 30 was the first time in my life I felt as if I was the "right" age. I didn't think anything could top my 30th...until I turned 40 :D

I like getting older. It rocks.

We rather enjoyed it when you turned 40 as well.

Didn't really enjoy turning 40 and being alone at the time but....the 40's have been so much better than I ever though. Like you said, comfortable in my own skin and still young enough to enjoy all the pleasures I have any inkling or desire to try....

So..I don't really miss the 20's or 30's so much...

like :p

Seriously, though, I really enjoy being in my thirties.
Seriously, I'd enjoy being in my thirties, too. Or forties...I'm not picky.

My fifties aren't bad, but some hot steamy sex would be nice, while I still have the energy and my bones don't creek.

I don't miss being labeled a racist and I don't miss being unemployed.

I don't miss having an awful relationshp with my in-laws, who I now get on well with. I don't miss living in any of my old houses.

art as a business. I'm glad I *can* do it, I'm glad I got sensible and stopped making myself do it for the legitimacy of polite society.

I don't miss...either of my parents being sick enough to require surgery...and they've had enough of those, but they're mostly alright today. :)

I don't miss my ex.

I don't miss being underage. I don't miss being too afraid to talk to new people.

...anything I ever threw out. Really need to get rid of more stuff.

High school

I just don't like being forced to do things. Luckily the staff was so fucked up the students went bananas and we ripped that school apart. I learned something that day, violent demonstrations do get things done.

...city traffic!

Holy McFuck, how do people commute every day and not blow their brains out? L dropped me off on Friday evening for my conference dinner, then turned around to go visit our friend who lives about 5km away. It took him 45 minutes to get there because of traffic!!!

45 minutes!

It's one of the reasons I continue to work nights. I see my share of drunks on the road on Friday and Saturday nights (sometimes they're driving home on Sunday morning ), but other than that, it's pretty smooth sailing!

Speaking of that traffic, there was one section of 3 lane hi-way (I-35) that slowed down to a stop and go crawl at the very same time every evening rush hour (exactly 5 PM) and slowly speed up within 30-45 minutes. So, they made it 6 lanes both ways. It didn't change a thing. It still slows down to a crawl at 5 PM and speeds up after 30-45 minutes. Those in the know are thinking that in the time it took to increase the road to 6 lanes, the population also grew.

It makes you wonder...what if they hadn't added those lanes when they did? I guess there is a science to knowing when extra lanes are needed, but they're just a little behind the curve (no pun intended).

That's not good news for us in the DC area! I-66 inside the Beltway is only two lanes because people in Arlington don't want it widened into their backyards. As a result, it's HOV-2 during rush hour (6:30-9am into the city, 4-6:30pm going out). This makes traffic everywhere along the I-66 corridor horrendous. They're supposedly going to widen it anyway, but I don't think it'll do much good. And it's been like this for years!

My daily commute is 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. That's to go 20 miles (32km).

My ex-step dad is a truck driver and he used to drive from Portland to San Francisco weekly. He says the traffic is so stopped up that there was this lady he'd watch get ready for work, every day, on the freeway. She'd get on the freeway in her PJ's, and then every time she was stopped work on getting dressed down to pantyhose and makeup.

This. Doing it as a business killed my urge to do it at all. So, yeah, I don't miss supporting myself with my paintbrush.

Wouldn't mind drumming up some of that business now though. Fucking economy...

*sigh*

Hugs...to you and all of us who are slogging through the sucky economy.

Balancing art and business can be soul draining. For me, it is a matter of erecting an imaginary wall in my brain. When I'm doing "art", I enjoy the act of it, I dive deep and swim in it and never give a second thought to anything else (even food most days, oops). When it's time for business, I get out of the metaphorical pool, dry off, grab my briefcase and get down to it, with not a thought of "art" in my head.

As much as I loathe the business part of writing, I have to admit that it has actually improved my "art", quite substantially. Knowing that I am competing against thousands and thousands of other people who all want what I want, forces me to step up my game.

That said, I would rather remove my own liver with a spoon than write a fricken two page, (double spaced!!!), synopsis of a 460 page novel. Fuck me!

Well, that's my rant for this morning. :)
