We heard this song on the way home from school today. My son wanted me to explain.

How the hell do you explain????

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I'm crying.

Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation tee-shirt, stupid bloody tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.

Mister city policeman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like lucy in the sky, see how they run.
I'm crying, i'm crying.
I'm crying, i'm crying.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob.

Sitting in an english garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don't come, you get a tan
From standing in the english rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.

Expert textpert choking smokers,
Don't you think the joker laughs at you?
See how they smile like pigs in a sty,
See how they smile.
I'm crying.

Semolina pilchard, climbing up the eiffel tower.
Elementary penguin singing hari krishna.
Man, you should have seen them kicking edgar allan poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.
I am the walrus, goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob.
Goo goo g'joob g'goo goo g'joob g'goo.

You just say "The Brits are eccentric"

...and leave him to work out the meaning when he is older and wiser and thinks that Mum will never know what The Beatles were singing about.

Its from a movie, from last year. The name of it escapes me but its set in the 60's, with the song sung by a group of hippies.

I've already been asked to explain Come Together. Um....????

Unfortunately, I listen to a lot of British music (Pink Floyd, The Who, etc.). I'm going to be explaining for a long time.

That would probably work, except that he's heard it (and other weird songs) almost from birth. I have eclectic tastes. ;)

Tell him, "It was the 60's. Back then it meant something. Now it doesn't. You had to be there."

We are two countries divided by what appears to be a common language but isn't.

Insisting that British musicians are "different" is probably the easiest way...

LOL oh was just saying thats where it came from. As far as the movie goes, its as cooky as the song is. As one of my friends put it, its best viewed "drunk or stoned outta your mind"

Hopefully you won't have to explain "Can't Explain"... hell, if Pete can't... :D

LOL ah -chuckles- Eh what can I say...hell my dad was only 15 during the famed summer of '69 :D

Though that does make me curious how that movie is while one is drunk, hmmm

I bought the record when new. wiki reference

It was "our song" for my second fiance and I...

I was there in the 60s and one of the few who remember that decade...

...and I was only eight, but I have older brothers and sisters, so I still grew up with it. :)

Whisper it quietly but that era of Beatles music is much better understood when high on LSD...
I was going to recommend you let him drop acid and listen to it again...but I suppose as his mom you wouldn't be too happy with that. Magic Mushrooms maybe?

Edited to add: Oh, and Ogg, isn't this the point where you reminisce about your LSD trip? Come on, you had to have taken at least one....

From The 40s

Once there lived a chicken who would say "chick-chick"
"Chick-chick" all day
Soon that chick got sick and tired of just "chick-chick"
So one morning he started to say:

"Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la
Check-a-la romey in a bananika
Bollika, wollika, can't you see
Chickery chick is me?"

Every time you're sick an tired of just the same old thing
Sayin' just the same old words all day
Be just like the chicken who found something new to sing
Open up your mouth and start to say
Oh!

"Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la
Check-a-la romey in a bananika
Bollika, wollika, can't you see
Chickery chick is me?"

FROM THE 50S

ABBA DABBA HONEYMOON
Way down in the congo land sitting in a coconut tree,
there was a monkey and a chimp--and Lordy how she loved him.
Everynight in the pale moonlight sitting in the coconut tree,
these love words she always said to he...

"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the monkey to the chimp.
"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the chimpee to the monk.
All night long they chattered away.
All day long they were happy and gay,
swinging and swaying in a honky, tonky way.

"Abba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba dabba"
said the chimp, "I love but you."
Abba dabba dabba in monkey talk means
"Chimp, I love you too."
Then the ol' baboon, one night in June,
married them and very soon,
they sailed away on an abba dabba honeymoon.

It was the searchlight going across the sky with a swooshing sound leaving big gold and purple bands behind it that made me vow never to touch the stuff again.

That and my bed breathing.

Please tell me you're playing. That you have not really been this deprived.

ETA...

Jag the ENTIRE movie Across The Universe was built from and around Beatles songs... not just this one song.

I remember sitting down to lunch. The older sister brought us sandwiches and her little brother said; "Wouldja kill it first?"
