I am now a proud chicken rancher...

This is probably correct, but the Queen is consumed with the Prepper mentality.

Therefore was shall eat expensive organic eggs.

Or stew expensive hens...

No she wont. Shell make pets of them and make you sleep in your truck if you cause them any angst.

Yes, I can see that; she first called me from the farm supply thinking of housing them out in one of the sheds. They are currently peeping at me from across the living room driving the parakeet crazy...

God knew this when he made them! Theyre not hunters. They'd make the forest a petting zoo.

I am worried that they are commie infiltrators - Rhode Island REDS!

Like that Russian RED wheat we grew back in KANSAS; that led to Sebelius and Imperial Presidential Mandates...

As if Rhode Island by itself isnt bad enough.

When I'm President the Hudson River is our new Eastern boundary.

That's the goal; an easy source of protein, easy for them, probably not so much for me once the cute wears off...

;) ;)

She's already talking 4-H project and leg bands so she can name them.

I told her, you don't name food, but I was quickly over-ruled.

You're going to find out how cold blooded she can be, aren't ya?

Ishmael

You have a point there!

We now have a captive red-eared slider, just over an inch in diameter who was "saved" from the mower only to be condemned to aquarium life for the foreseeable future.

:)

My neighbor down the street got caught with chickens by the county a couple of years ago. He spent about $20,000 on lawyers to fight the man, but the man won. We have zoning here in Berkeley-East and zoning don't take kindly to farm animals in an R-150 zone. After the chicken wars, I thought hard about getting a goat, just for my own amusement. But then winter came and I lost interest.

Those are magnificent chickens! Sturdy and fertile ... large eggs with brown shells.

Nobody would eat a white shelled egg in RI

A friend of mine once raised them and he put some ground clam shells additive to their feed. He was never one to fuss with measuring things. The first batch of eggs were indestructible. You couldn't crack one of those babies open with a sledge hammer. :D Many laughs.

They'll keep you in eggs for a while. You can figure 6eggs/chicken/week peak production. Large brown eggs with a high % of double yolks if you feed 21%.

Ishmael

He feeds ours dog food, along with whatever they forage.

My youngest sister's first husband had a small farm Well, he bought her a calf with full intentions of future ribeyes, porterhouses, etc.

She named it.

I don't know how long cows live but that was 20 something years ago and it is still grazing to my knowledge.

Yeah, I told my husband he could raise any animals he liked, but they'd be pets, not food. Chickens are food.
